Dems Sink Women's Museum Over "Transgender" "Women"

The Dems have not given up on gender ideology.
It's now a fairly solid orthodoxy on the left.

WSJ: Trump Has Lost the Governing Plot

I didn't support Trump in the primary.
In the general, there was no alternative.
The two three things about Trump that have always concerned me most:
[1] That he'll so alienate centrists as to put a Democrat in the White House at the end of his term.
[2] That he'll wreck our foreign policy...and possibly start WWIII
[3] That he routinely fans the flames of political division and enmity
He's already done [1] once--and I fully expect him to do it again.
He's done his best to do the first part of [2]. Though if he succeeds in Iran, he'll be a hero. Cuba would just be icing on the cake.
[3] is just a constant... The Democrats are worse. But Trump is POTUS. And: he's off-the-scale bad in that respect. The Dems are in a different dimension...the dimension in which everyone who doesn't think that women have penises is literally Hitler... But an even vaguely savvy President would have basically destroyed the Democrats as a viable political party by now. Instead, Trump is basically the only thing sustaining them...
   Anyway...
Yeah. The slush fund is not good. But I've already stated my reservations about the case against it: Trump knows--as we all do--that the left will move Heaven and Earth to destroy him--and his family--after he leaves office. I mean, they tried to destroy him when he was in office last time. Then tried to destroy him after he was out. And this time they've tried to kill him three times already...and their rhetoric clearly indicates that they think it is justified. So, even though I disagree with the slush fund idea (knowing very little about it), I understand.

McCarthy: The Trump Slush Fund is an Abuse of Political Power, Not a Legal Wrong

link

At least every week or so Trump does something that makes me ashamed to have voted for him...despite the fact that there wasn't really any alternative...
OTOH, the Dems have already deployed really despicable lawfare campaigns against him--both when he was in office and out of it. And they've made it clear that they'll come after him and his family (and possibly anyone in his administration) when he leaves office for good. And Democrat judges and Democrat juries will be only too happy to do their part. Not to mention a (saints preserve us) Democrat administration...
So, as angrifying and appalling as this is...I can't quite blame him to the degree I, perhaps, ought to.
And I'm going to add that the Dems do roughly the same sort of thing, having handed out hefty settlements to several of the Russiagategate conspirators. Not even mention their pervasive sue-and-settle schemes...which are somewhat different...but much more harmful than anything Trump is doing.
Nevertheless: I wish Congress would grow a pair and fire a shot across the Presidential bow...

Dems Release 2024 "Autopsy"

Ok, here's my prediction about what's in it:
  • We didn't go woke enough
  • We didn't go socialist enough
  • The Republicans are big meanies and we are good and principled
  • We didn't get our message out
  • Evil Svengali-like YouTube "influencer" guys like Andrew Tate and Hitler mesmerized youmg men
  • Trump lies and we virtuously tell the truth
  • SEXISM
  • RACISM
  • TEH HOMISECKZISM
  • TRANSISM
  • HATE HATE HATE
  • America just not ready for a black female-identifying Prez
  • MERIKKKA STOOPID
  • WITE SUPREMAZY
  • Deplorables
  • Bitter clingers
  • Garbage peoplez
Both parties do some version of this bullshit when they lose. "We didn't get our message out" is probably the most frequently-occurring bit of bullshit. It means you don't have to admit that any of your policy positions are bad, and also constitutes a preliminary plea for more $$$ next time.

Spanberger Vetoes Retail Weed

Well, I disagree with the decision, but my disagreement is uninformed--I don't know what is in the legislation, and don't know what e.g. enforcement stuff the Governor objected to. She says she's for it in principle. And, since I wasn't interested enough to read the bill, I don't know what I'm talking about...so I can only really tentatively and conditionally disagree.
She knows more about what's actually going on than I do...obviously.
It's kinda disappointing because I thought retail weed was the one good thing that would come out of Democrat rule...
I do at least semi-agree with those who say we have to think harder about it because (allegedly) some new evidence indicates marijuana is extremely bad for young people. I don't believe that...it's just the kind of research conclusion you can basically predict will become fashionable every now and then--regardless of the facts...but who knows...maybe it's right.
But anyway.
Personally, I'm a bit disappointed, but I don't count this one all that much against the Governor. Seems to me that it's within the realm of reason.

Glaciers are "More-Than-Human" Beings

It's not clear what this is supposed to mean, but there's some indication that it may just be a bad way of saying that they have some degree of intrinsic value.
People in this general region of intellectual space like to express their views inaccurately, with a kind of literary inflection, so that they can suggest something cool and weird and revolutionary...but retreat to something boring and defensible when challenged. They build their views with motte-and-bailey-ing in mind. So maybe it's just that.

Harvard to Limit 'A's to Fight Grade Inflation

link
Friend of mine who did his graduate work in religious studies at Harvard told me that giving out 'A's is basically a strategy among harried Harvard grad students and precariously-employed junior professors. No student complains about an 'A' nor asks for a conference about it...and giving out 'A's means that you don't have to grade the papers as carefully. And, of course, grading is one of the most tedious, soul-sucking parts of college teaching. Also of course: high grades mean happy students, and happy students mean better course evals...but everybody knows that...

Matthew Continetti: Woke Isn't Dead, or Even Resting

Sad but true.
It's a little misleading to focus on woketarianism. That's just one way of talking about certain aspects of the problem. It's fine for many purposes. But the general problems, IMO, are:
[1] The radicalization of the American left
[2] The ideological capture of many of our institutions--including the Democratic party--by this radicalized left.
The contemporary radical left is largely characterized by "woke" issues--that is: race, sex (including so-called "gender") and related matters. Unlike some, I wouldn't quite include socialism, climate apocalypticism, nor open borders in wokeness. But all such categories have fuzzy boundaries. That's NBD.
Anyway:
DEI was never the main problem. "DEI" was a useful catspaw that the academic left used to advance radical left-wing ideology in its various aspects. It was a way to hire women and non-white men over white men--demographic groups that all trend left--to hire people with left-preferred sexual orientations and other so-called "identities"...and just to outright hire leftists. A straight, white male leftist would stand a good chance against a black conservative if a hiring decision came down to the two of them.
(Note: I don't speak of my own department, which is notably sane.)
Finally, ridding academia of its leftist bias will be just a tad easier than going down to your local First Baptist Church and getting the congregation to give up on the divinity of Christ...  We can't give up. But it's not going to be easy. It will not happen in my lifetime...

Relevant to me:
The Virginia Department of Education [and] State Council of Higher Education for Virginia...shall develop guidance for schools, including ... public institutions of higher education in their engagement with persons with the lawful authority to perform civil arrests who conduct or attempt to conduct a federal civil immigration arrest in a school building or on school grounds, with such guidance informed by input from relevant stakeholders.
Yeah, no.
Regardless of what "guidance" they produce, I'll cooperate with ICE.

Prease Accept Our Aporogy...or: Find Someone Who Loves You Like NBC Loves the CCP

link
The weird pro-China attitude is pretty common on the left, IMO.
Though for the record, I don't think the left loves China as much as the wacky right loves Russia...since they invaded Ukraine, anyway... The right's sudden attack of Russophilia was just nuts. Well, is... I just had a conservative friend forward me some pro-Russian screed the other week. He's way smart enough to know better.
Anyway, the left's sinophilia was part of what drove/drives its refusal to admit the COVID lab-leak hypothesis. Though...the alternative explanation often involves really disgusting Chinese gustatory habits...so...I don't really see why they think it's any better that the LLH (which involves incompetence).

Turley: Kamala's "No Bad Ideas" is a Uniquely Bad Idea

As Turley notes: many Dem leaders have decided that if they can't win, they should wreck the system.
I'd add: the Democrats are currently made of bad ideas.
If it weren't for bad ideas, they'd have no ideas at all.
Since the Dems embraced the unhinged woketarian left, they've become an actual danger to the country--and Western Civilization.
Worse than Trump, even.
In fact, Trump's biggest political selling point is that he's not the left--and, in fact, is doing a hell of a lot to roll back their disastrous policies.
DEI, CRT, gender ideology, open borders, the massive, Orwellian attack on free speech that was the "anti-misinformation"-industrial complex...just to name some of the headline crackpottery...
Their problem has been embracing crazy, unproven, obviously disastrous and anti-liberal ideas.
The solution is obvious: give up what every sane person can see as terrible, radical ideas. That is: move back to the center.
Brainstorming to come up with even crazier, more destructive, and more radical ideas is the very last thing they need to do.

The Lab Coat Oscar: Delta Variant Edition

Jeez, I almost forgot about THE MOST DEADL PLAGUEDEMIC OF ALL TIMEZ...

Rousey Beats Carano in 17 Seconds

If I'd have had to bet, I'd have bet on Rousey...but I wouldn't have bet much.
At least she did the smart thing. I find it painful to watch grapplers who fight strikers and then keep their distance the whole fight, occasionally tentatively shooting, and eventually lose on points or get KO'd. Jesus, just take your shot.
Rousey's striking is a joke--as her recent shadowboxing video made clear.
Anyway: smart move.

Progressive Judges Lead to Out-of-Control Crime

Not that you don't realize this, but: lighter sentences, lower bail, lower conviction rates, reclassifying offenses as lesser ones, lying about crime stats...not to mention "depolicing" and "decarceration"...all lead to more crime. There is no doubt about this. It's common sense--and well-established by reputable studies. Not that it needs to be. And, of course, not that all studies are reputable. Many aren't. Producing bogus studies in support of its idiotic policies is one the left's favorite weapons.
The whole progressive package of ideas leads to more crime--including more serious crime. Including more violent crime.
Their laughable responses are all just things they want to do anyway: midnight basketball, free needles, head start...and just generally more money showered on the leftist NGO-industrial complex.
Yeah, none of those things work.
Progressive alternate between denying the plain facts and tacitly admitting that they don't think increased crime rates are a big deal.
Neither of these things is true.
It's downright astonishing how many insane ideas the left has adopted over the past decade.
Though I must admit, this is one of those issues such that the seeds of the madness were already present on the blue team back when it used to be liberal. It's just much, much worse now. I can't believe I put up with this kind of patent reality-denial when I voted blue... In my defense, this was something I was always skeptical of...but I fell for the propaganda just enough to prevent me from really objecting to the policies.

DEI Hire Captain to Face Court Marshal in Sinking of HMNZS Manawanui

Mostly I'm complaining about this because of the indignant response from the left and the RNZN when people noted that this was very probably the captain's fault...and that she was very probably a DEI hire... NO SHE'S A HERO we were told. It was a miracle everyone escaped with their lives! It's pure bigotry to think otherwise!
Everybody could see that this was likely incompetence.
Actually looking at the evidence is, like, x-phobic or something...

The Retail Crime-Closure Cycle: Another Democrat Debacle

The left lives in an alternate reality forged in their echo chamber. They advocate some of the most insane policies ever conceived. To make matters worse, they refuse to acknowledge the adverse consequences of the policies. Then, of course, they engage THE NARRATIVE(tm) to explain away their failures.
In this case, what happens is: Dem "depolicing"/"decarceration" (i.e.: anarchophiliac) policies result in the failure of inner-city jurisdictions to enforce the law. In particular: shoplifting laws. These areas are already subject to higher crime rates--for reasons the left refuses to acknowledge. Businesses like Walgreens begin losing money hand over fist. Eventually they close. It's a business decision. Leftists/Democrats are committed to anarchophilia and especially don't want to enforce the laws in these places as they'll end up arresting mostly blacks. When businesses close, they engage their conspiracy-theory engines, which spit out: in-principle corporate hatred of blacks... So their policies actually end up mostly harming the very race they are near-religiously devoted to promoting.

Is The House a Toss-Up?

Sounds that way.

Starmer to Stand Down?

Judson Berger: Democrats' Magnificent Meltdown in Virginia

The Dems' actions since they took both houses of the GA and the Governorship have basically made it clear that, if we want an even minimally free and rational state, we have to do everything within reason to win next time--and, y'know...all the next times. Actually: win big enough to undo the damage they've done...and then never lose this big again... Unfortunately, it's NoVa's Commonwealth now...the rest of us just live in it...
Dems have made it clear that they will implement the most radical leftist policies they can get away with--and their actions strongly suggest that they will do what they can to make it impossible for the Pubs to win back power. This kind of rabid radicalism is an absolute blueprint for disaster in my opinion. Once a party becomes dedicated to that kind of partisanship or radicalism--let alone both--I worry that it's just a matter of time before it gains an intolerable permanent advantage. Whereupon violence becomes a rational option for the other side. The left is currently far more prone to imposing such totalitarianism, as we have seen over the last decade--and, in VA, over the last six months...
The national Dems are openly discussing--with apparent seriousness--some extremely radical options for the next time they gain power: packing the Court, ending the filibuster, making DC and Puerto Rico states, and prosecuting members of the Trump administration. They're also discussing "re-educating" or prosecuting Trump supporters...but I can't believe that even they would try that. Some of these aren't realistic without huge majorities. Which they're unlikely to get...
Though this touches on another problem: with the new interpretation of the Voting Rights Act, Pubs currently winning the redistricting wars, and the possibility of changing Congressional apportionment rules...we may actually be looking at a significant, long-term red advantage. The blues have--according to the view I'm currently inclined to accept--enjoyed many illicit electoral advantages for decades. Losing that would be strategically disastrous for them. It would, IMO, be a win for the nation, as it would force them back toward the center... Of course they don't see it that way...
Pubs are discussing e.g. de-retrocession--making DC square again...though it seems just to be loose talk. Believe me, it's tempting. And Constitutional. But I think that would be the last straw. It would drive the blues even farther over the edge--if there are degrees of being over the edge...
OTOH, another view on the right is basically: we can't hold back for fear we'll drive them over the edge. They're already over the edge. We have to utilize every advantage we have while we have it. Specifically, this line of thinking says that, if we can gain significant advantage by nuking the filibuster--e.g. to pass the SAVE America Act--we should do it. Because the filibuster is already toast. The Dems will nuke it as soon as they can. So we might as well do it while we can make big changes in our favor. (However, formally amending rule XXII requires a 2/3 majority. But new precedent can be established in particular kinds of cases via the nuclear option with just 60 votes...)
It's appalling that we can't pass the SAVE America Act...but it doesn't seem worth nuking the filibuster over...
   Anyway
I continue to think that our only hope as a nation is for the Dems to return to their senses. But I no longer believe that to be inevitable. I'm not even sure I think it's likely...

McCarthy: Be Skeptical of Claims the U.S. Hasn't Damaged Iran's Military Capabilities Much

LOL I never even considered taking these reports seriously.
Anybody who takes reports like these from the NYT seriously is a very slow learner indeed.
Anonymous NYT report to the effect that some obviously very successful Trumpian project is secretly unsuccessful?
Why, I could hardly be more convinced!
For that report to be right, this would have to be the most unsuccessful major American military operation since...uh...I couldn't even...maybe Operation Eagle Claw, the failed Iran hostage rescue mission in '79? And it's a stretch to call that major... I guess you could say Vietnam...but that wasn't so much a military failure as a lost propaganda war at home...
Anyway.
I don't believe that anyone but the deep blue left believed that.
I used to take every report like that seriously and either dive into it or automatically retreat to suspended judgment...
Now I just chuckle and move on...
The serious concern--seems to me--is the concern that the Iranian regime can just endure the pain longer than we can keep dishing it out. The left is already calling this a "forever war" and banging that drum... I mean...we're going on nearly 10 weeks or so! Practically the Hundred Years War over here...

You really can't make this shit up.

Dan McLaughlin on "Barfare": Disbarring Eastman Breaks More Norms

This generally coheres with my pathetically ignorant views of the subject...FWTW...
The left's longstanding commitment to lawfare is another one of the asymmetries that make me more sympathetic to Trump's hardball response. I don't like his use of the DOJ to push his pet cases...but I've got to say...I think fighting fire with fire is generally acceptable...and sometimes the only effective response...

The Woke Odyssey

So, word on the web is that the new Odyssey:
Is based on a recent woke/feminist translation
Features Ellen Page--who is currently cosplaying a man ("Elliot") as Achilles
and also:
features a black Helen of Troy
So...miss me with that shit...as we now say...
Look, I don't--or didn't used to--mind messing around with such casting decisions. You want to cast a woman as Achilles...well...your choice I guess...
And generally I don't--or didn't--care about race-swapping in roles because I don't--or didn't--think race was really an important characteristic of people...
But that's not the point in this case.
In this case, the director, Christopher Nolan, is clearly using the Odyssey to make a woke statement. He's casting page to cohere with the woketarian view that people can change their sex by proclamation. (Of course that point is concealed in a fog of Orwellian jargon about "gender"...). And race-swapping Helen of Troy is just intentionally provocative, obviously. I'm not interested here in the question whether, sub specie aeternitatis, race shouldn't matter...I'm interested in the intentional subordination of one of the most important works of Western Civilization to woketarianism. As others have noted, the left would probably hit the roof if they made Cleopatra white in a movie...even though she was, in fact, white...
And, as for the translation:
The translator seems to variously claim it's feminist, and that it's just more accurate. If the latter is true--which, almost certainly, it isn't*--well, then that's that... But, again: it isn't.*

*It's not that I read Ancient Greek, nor know that much about the Odyssey...it's rather that, after at least a decade of this bullshit, we no longer have to give such claims the benefit of the doubt. We know they're almost certainly bullshit.

Spanberger Signs "Assault Weapons" Bill

Stupid.
Thank God for the Trump administration: the DOJ is taking 'em to court.
The Democrats are just wrong about everything now.

Nate the Lawer: DC Officials Caught Faking Crime Stats to Hide Police Defunding Disaster

The left was ranting and raving about low crime rates in D.C. and blah blah Trump was nuts and martial law and blah blah blah. People not locked up in the left's echo chamber were mostly saying that they were skeptical about the data--but most weren't outright denying its accuracy. Many people were saying basically Look, this just doesn't comport with our experience. There's crime everywhere and we don't feel safe. This is to their credit. And this is par for the course for the last decade. The left passionately embraces the leftist "narrative"...even when it seems utterly cracked. Sane people, unfortunately, are still hesitant to just reject the left's bullshit...and so are more circumspect.
   No.
   Just reject it.
By this point it's clear that they are basically either lying or delusional about everything...
If by some chance they turn out to be right about something you can always go back and admit error.
But, look: by this point, the safe bet about anything they say is: they're crazy / lying.
Once again, the left's ideologically-driven story turns out to be false--and obviously so. But the lefty Powers That Be, combined with the quasi-religious True Believers in the lefty herd...just installed an official myth that propped up their preferred worldview...and, of course, entailed that Orange Man Bad....
But it did its job: it got them over the hump when exposure could have been genuinely politically harmful. Sure, epistemically this is much worse, and it reveals, yet again, their Orwellian lunacy...but nobody cares about that. It's a price they're obviously willing to pay...

The Return of the Moderate Spanberger?

Well...by the standards of the WaPo, I guess...
I mean, look: good for Spanberger.
I shouldn't be churlish about it.
Good on her. Right decision, in my expert economicalistic opinion...
But apparently there was some pushback against this bill by Dems, too.
So it's not like she's totally going moderate rogue or anything.
But still: good job, Governor.

Fauci & co. Covered Up Laboratory Origin of COVID

link
The refusal to acknowledge that the lab-leak theory was more plausible was/is one of the left's outright denials of reason that just left me dumbfounded from the beginning. It was always obvious that it was more likely. I mean, you can acknowledge a hypothesis is more prima facie plausible and still think it's overridden by other evidence or whatever...not that such evidence existed... But to refuse to acknowledge that it's prima facie more likely...that's just nuts. That's what really gave the lie to the left's position. But man, the word went out and they fell in line--right away.
It was crazy enough that they politicized even this...it had something to do with their strange sinophilia, and their tendency to make up stories about the racist origins of any theory they don't like...but also, of course, with TDS... Once Trump acknowledge that the bug came from China, the left rocketed to the other side. Remember that one airhead reporter babe who asked something like "Why do you insist on calling it the China virus when there is no evidence that only Chinese people get it?"
LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL
You almost can't make this stuff up.
I still love his reponse:
"Because it's from Chi-Na"
LOOOOOOOOOOL
I mean, he drives me crazy, but he drives them crazy too...and that's SO much more important...
Anyway.
Now it turns out that the left wasn't just denying plain facts...which is hardly even notable for them anymore...but their hero, Fauci, was actively covering up the origins.

Jesus Christ.
You almost can't make this shit up...

Word on the web is that signs point to no re: the spanmander (spanbermander? spanbergmander? spanbergermander? spanbergermanderer?) going down in flames at SCOVA.

But there are just so many obvious violations that I will be pretty damn surprised if the spanmander--actually the most notable district looks like a lobster, not a lizard--stands.
Looks like FL is going to balance out VA anyway...and when their VA project fails...boom...four more red seats...
I detest gerrymandering...but, to my discredit, I also can't resist cheering when the blues lose these days.

HMD: NYT's Latte Logic of Social Collapse

savage
I watched part of that podcast/discussion/video/whatever-it-is...
Boy.
Those are just about the most irritating three people you'll find anywhere.
Here are three harmful things about Continental philosophy:
[1] Much of it is utter bullshit.
[2] It's highly politicized bullshit--it isn't just easy to cram into a political discussion--that's basically what it's designed for.
[3] It is the easiest thing in the world to mouth bits of it...which...however mangled...aren't really all that much worse than the original, presumably non-mangled versions.
The quote Mac Donald extracts from the discussion are almost some combination of hilarious and appalling.
What abject dumbassery.
It doesn't help that these are rich, shit-head nepo babies (as we now, apparently, say).

David Cattron: Dems May Not Survive the Callais Ruling

I want a sane, center-left Democrat party--not no Democrat party at all.
But beggars can't be choosers...

That Maine Dem with a Totenkopf Tattoo

I don't care about this.
Except for the wacko double standards of the left.
(The right does it too...but, as usual, the contemporary left has dialed it to 11...)
The vocal vanguard of the contemporary left thinks that everybody right of Bernie Sanders is a Nazi. They think Trump is a Nazi. They think that anyone on the right to raises his hand to wave is doing a Heil Hitler. Calling their interlocutors and opponents "Nazis" and "Fascists" has become almost a verbal tic with them...
...but having an SS tattoo...see...that's obviously not Nazi. What could you even be thinking?

I haven't heard his story. Maybe he's just amazingly ignorant of history? That seems more likely to me than that he's a Nazi. Go to any university campus and wander around the humanities and social science departments--you'll see a lot of hammers and sickles...and those are somewhat more difficult to blame on ignorance...though easier than you might think...
I mean, if all I know about the guy is that he's got that tattoo, I wouldn't vote for him...but that's probably not all Maine voters know about him.]
It's more relevant to me that he's a Democrat...for that there's no excuse...
But, again: I don't care.

A Cease-Fire Doesn't Stop the Clock on the War Powers Act

Jesus Christ what a stupid f*cking argument.
I am not a lawyer...but you don't have to be.
Jesus I'm fed up with this administration.
They've done a genuinely mind-boggling amount of good stuff...but they say such flat-out stupid shit sometimes...
I'm in stage 4 Trump fatigue.
