The Woke Odyssey
So, word on the web is that the new Odyssey:
Is based on a recent woke/feminist translation
Features Ellen Page--who is currently cosplaying a man ("Elliot") as Achilles
and also:
features a black Helen of Troy
So...miss me with that shit...as we now say...
Look, I don't--or didn't used to--mind messing around with such casting decisions. You want to cast a woman as Achilles...well...your choice I guess...
And generally I don't--or didn't--care about race-swapping in roles because I don't--or didn't--think race was really an important characteristic of people...
But that's not the point in this case.
In this case, the director, Christopher Nolan, is clearly using the Odyssey to make a woke statement. He's casting page to cohere with the woketarian view that people can change their sex by proclamation. (Of course that point is concealed in a fog of Orwellian jargon about "gender"...). And race-swapping Helen of Troy is just intentionally provocative, obviously. I'm not interested here in the question whether, sub specie aeternitatis, race shouldn't matter...I'm interested in the intentional subordination of one of the most important works of Western Civilization to woketarianism. As others have noted, the left would probably hit the roof if they made Cleopatra white in a movie...even though she was, in fact, white...
And, as for the translation:
The translator seems to variously claim it's feminist, and that it's just more accurate. If the latter is true--which, almost certainly, it isn't*--well, then that's that... But, again: it isn't.*
*It's not that I read Ancient Greek, nor know that much about the Odyssey...it's rather that, after at least a decade of this bullshit, we no longer have to give such claims the benefit of the doubt. We know they're almost certainly bullshit.
