Climate Protesters Block Highway to Burning Man; Nevada Rangers (Over?)React

Blocking roads is bullshit, and I have little patience for climate hysteriacs.
And, of course, they're also anti-capitalist protesters, as anti-capitalism is a cornerstone of climate hysteria, and the illiberal left generally.
Many conservatives are gleeful about this video of the Nevada Rangers and Paiute Tribal Police arresting climate protesters blocking a highway as thousands of people are trying to get to Burning Man.
But seems to me like an appalling use of excessive force.
Some of the idiot protesters have chained themselves to the trailer they've used to block the road. Rangers ram the trailer with a truck, and could have seriously injured them. It's hard to see how ramming the trailer was justified.
At least one also immediately draws his sidearm and more-or-less throws one of the (female) protesters to the ground.
Yes, the protesters are stupid and annoying. Yes, it is dangerous to block roads--it can prevent emergency vehicles from getting through, among other things.
OTOH: Burning Man. Hard not to think: so what?
But this just seems like way too much force to me.
JMO. I don't really know anything about law enforcement.

Masks: For the Record

John Tierney: "No Masks, Please, We're Rational."
My view on masks, for what it's worth (which is not much) remains about the same as it has been for the last year or so. To wit: I find it hard to believe that masks do nothing. Intuitively, I'd think that that better masks have a better chance of doing at least something. There is rather obviously a pro-mask bias among the "elite"/ on the left. That includes the CDC. We basically know that all the orthodoxies in that sector are left-biased. And the left has adopted, largely as a matter of values / politics, an alarmist view about COVID, and correspondingly overly-positive views of masks, vaxes, lockdowns, etc. And, of course, there is a general tendency to impose their views via government / coercion. IMO conservatives have gone too far in the other direction, especially with regard to the vax--many older and less-healthy conservatives, who it seems would benefit from the vax, refuse to get it. Radical anti-vax views proliferate on the right. There is an orthodoxy in some sectors of the right that the vax is an absolute killer--contrary to the available evidence.
At any rate...bottom line: I'd be surprised if masks did nothing. But the available evidence--available to me, anyway--does not seem to support mask mandates. Forced to bet, I'd bet that the harm of masks outweighs their benefits. Though I probably wouldn't bet a whole lot. We know that wearing a mask has costs--I, for example, really dislike wearing them.* And we (basically) know that mask mandates did significant harm to kids. (And that kids aren't at much risk anyway.) And, in the absence of strong evidence in favor of mandates, I think we have to leave the decision to individuals.
And, of course, COVID is less dangerous than the Prevailing Orthodoxy has it... So that alters a lot of calculations.
Anyway, in general, I still think the Great Barrington Declaration got things a lot righter than the Prevailing Orthodoxy.
Anyway 2: That's my thinking on the matter--again, not worth much.

*I might also argue that the progressive Powers That Be have made things worse by their coercion. Now I--like many others--also dislike masks because they are forced on me. Wearing a mask feels like a kind of capitulation to the PPTB...

Why Far-Right Political Violence Gets More Attention Than Far-Left Political Violence

This seems plausible initially, arguing that the far right just kills a lot more people.
Toward the end, it starts spinning off into space, basically accusing DeSantis of...something...I'm not sure what...

Turley: Another Flawed Trump Indictment (GA)

IMO right on target, as usual.
Intentional misinterpretation of the words of their opponents is one of the left's favorite tactics.

Political Correctness and "Non-Binary" Genital Surgery

The role of leftist "gender" politics in this madness becomes even more apparent.

Turley: Trump Mugshot Ignites a Tinderbox Nation

I think that the Georgia, New York, and federal January 6th indictments are unwarranted and threaten free speech. Moreover, it is valid for many to object that these prosecutions could have occurred years ago, but were launched just before the presidential election so that Trump will be running from court to court through the general election.
It is also true that the Mar-a-Lago case is more serious and more substantive . . . and that threat is continuing to grow as a threat for Trump as witnesses change their testimony and Trump aides confirm key prosecution claims.
Likewise, while I believe the case against Trump in the Georgia indictment is weak, there are defendants in that case that face stronger claims on specific election-related crimes.
Of course, in an age of rage, reason is the first to die. We cannot allow that to happen; we cannot allow rage addicts to drive our political or legal processes. We have the greatest legal system in the world. We will sort out these issues from the criminalization of political speech to the claim that Trump can be barred from the ballot even without a charge or conviction.
Courts are likely to divide on these issues. However, we remain a nation of laws. That tradition takes a certain leap of faith. We do not support that system only when we prevail. That is the view of court packers like Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D., Mass.) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D., N.,Y.). Notably, Ocasio-Cortez even said that she does not understand why we need a Supreme Court.
Even law professors and legal commentators have called our Constitution “trash” and called for the country to “reclaim America from constitutionalism.” That is the greatest danger of these times: that our deep divisions will cause us to lose faith in our defining values and in each other.
The Trump mugshot captures a defining moment for our country. It will define us. I believe that it is paramount that appellate courts consider the merits of the free speech and other challenges to the Georgia, New York, and federal cases. That may be difficult if judges support these prosecutors in demanding trials before constitutional appeals are taken. Appellate judges could agree, in good faith, that challenges are premature before any convictions.
The important thing is for citizens not to be played as chumps. We will sort this out. The courts will address these important legal issues as citizens resolve the equally important political issues raised by these prosecutions.

Strange Days Indeed

Trump's a loose cannon who refuses to stop making unproven, damaging claims about electoral fraud. OTOH, he's turned out to be crucially right about the deep state and the elite's corrupt grip on power. He is now being prosecuted from every direction--in part because some of the charges seem to actually have merit, in part because the Democratic elite is happy to use any means at its disposal to eliminate a hated political rival. A faction willing to perpetrate Russiagate will do just about anything.
Another Trumpian insight: "the uniparty." Elite Republicans are the handmaidens of the Democrats.
It has become clearer and clearer that the Bidens are influence-peddlers. Trump was right to investigate their Ukraine ties. Therefore the first impeachment was even more unjust than was clear at the time. The Democrat elites are so powerful that a sitting President was impeached for investigating their grift.
So we have a wild man bullshitter/truth-teller who has blown the lid off a degree of rottenness in government beyond what most of us imagined. Said wild man is himself flawed to such an extent that, in less desperate times, most of us would not even consider voting for him for dog catcher. And yet now, he seems to be the lesser evil--and perhaps by far.
Which is not yet to mention the fact that our most powerful political faction/party has completely lost its mind. It is now possessed by a totalitarian quasi-religious ideology that seeks to suppress and control speech, inquiry and thought in general. Its vanguard routinely hands down ludicrous falsehoods that are dutifully believed, propagated and institutionalized by its priesthood and foot soldiers--men are women, the brainwashing and sexual mutilation of children is a moral obligation, the nation is made of racism, whites are racist by definition, racist police are gunning down black Americans in the streets with impunity, the world will end if we do not diligently set about "dismantling" capitalism and abandoning prosperity, COVID is a terrifying plague that justifies...well...just about anything the elites say it does.
Unhinged as Trump often seems, he is practically the voice of sweet reason compared to the contemporary progressive left.
And overlaying all this is the fact that Trump has been right over and over again, even when what he said seemed beyond the pale.. Though I doubt it, it will not exactly be the most astonishing thing in the world if he ends up being righter about the election than we think.
One of the most unnerving things about all this to me is that so many people in my social world still committed to the left--seem almost entirely unshaken by its unhinging. Trump's crackpottery earns their outrage--rightly so, to some extent. But the far greater madness on the left seems barely to register as a blip on their radar.
But I suppose the aspect of the madness that seems most salient to me today is: a viable (if radically flawed) Presidential candidate is, apparently, being torpedoed by elite-left lawfare...while the DOJ apparently protects the sitting President's crime family...
   This really is banana-republic-grade lunacy.

Some German Daycare Centers Introduce "Sexual Exploration Rooms" With Rules For Children To "Pet And Explore Each Other" While Nude

This is the most fucking repulsive thing I think I've ever heard.
It's obvious that the left aims to normalize pedophilia. Its intellectual heroes like Sartre and Foucault went on record supporting it. They're clearly dragging children into this madness for a reason. They already argue that it's impermissible to have sexual preferences--men who don't want to have sex with other men, and women who don't want to have sex with men are genital bigots. It won't take long before they're arguing for "age identification," i.e. permitting people to simply declare their (imaginary) age. Then they'll argue that it's bigoted to prefer people within a certain age range--so children who don't want to have sex with adults will be deemed bigots.
There is simply nothing so depraved that it's out of the realm of possibility for the progressive left.

'Woke' Is a Racial Slur--and I'll Bet You Can Guess Which One

A guest bullshitter on MSDNC declared that 'woke' is a racial slur--"another way of saying" "the n-word."
See, it's ok for lefties to use it--but if non-lefties use the term....THAT'S LITERALLY THE N-BOMB, BIGOT.
This is part of their overall strategy to prevent anyone from naming their view. They've objected to every term that's been used--starting with the actual, traditional, and most accurate term 'political correctness.' They deployed their second-favorite "argument" in that case:  [fill in the bad feature of the left here] does not exist. As you know, there's no such thing as cancel culture, no such thing as Antifa, and, in general, no such thing as x when x is something bad about the left that people have begun to criticize.
In this case, they've just gone straight for their very favorite "argument": you're a racist.
One might actually be forgiven for thinking that You're a racist is the only idea they've got...
But it isn't true. They've got an absolute metric shit-ton of ideas...incredibly, unbelievably, almost unfathomably stupid ideas...
You're a racist is merely their favorite.

GOP Debate / Trump on Tucker

Did not watch either of these last night.

The Return of COVID Hysteria?: Biden Administration Gearing Up For More Mandates / Lockdowns?

Given that the vax apparently doesn't stop infection or spread, and evidence mounts against the effectiveness of mask mandates...one can't but wonder about the point of such things.
One conservative hypothesis: it's about control.
I've generally rejected that hypothesis...but I'm reconsidering it.

"Simon(e) D Sun": STOP USING THE PHONEY SCIENCE OF BIOLOGY TO JUSTIFY TRANSPHOBIA, BIGOT

While this is a small overview, the science is clear and conclusive: sex is not binary, transgender people are real. It is time that we acknowledge this. Defining a person’s sex identity using decontextualized “facts” is unscientific and dehumanizing. The trans experience provides essential insights into the science of sex and scientifically demonstrates that uncommon and atypical phenomena are vital for a successful living system. Even the scientific endeavor itself is quantifiably better when it is more inclusive and diverse. So, no matter what a pundit, politician or internet troll may say, trans people are an indispensable part of our living reality.
Transgender humans represent the complexity and diversity that are fundamental features of life, evolution and nature itself. That is a fact. [emphasis xir's]

It's been slightly different with e.g. transanity and CRT.
In the case of CRT it was:
  • It isn't being taught in K-12
  • LOL it is literally impossible to teach it before graduate school.
  • Ok it's being taught...a lot.
  • It's good that it's being taught.
  • It is literally necessary to teach CRT in order to teach anything about race.
  • Why do conservatives want to hide the history of slavery in the U.S.?

PANDEMIC PANDEMONIUM: BE AFRAID!!!!!1

City Journal: "How to Defeat Left-Wing Radicalism"

Ilya Shapiro's "Force Open Debate on Campus" is particularly good.

One of my many fascinating views on this: enforce institutional neutrality about controversial political issues on public universities by dramatically and immediately cutting funding if they violate the principle.

Garland Appoints Biased Special Prosecutor to Investigate (" ") Hunter Biden Case

Alright, I've been rather skeptical of this stuff--though off-and-on it seems to me that you just have to be naive not to connect the dots in the obvious way...
   But this is an outrage.
The original deal seems to have been an outrage--though I could be wrong about that.
Appointing the same prosecutor to be (pseudo-)special counsel...this is a damned outrage. If this were Barr and one of Trump's kids we'd be hearing...well...we'd have been hearing for the last three years...all about it every night on the news. Every minute on CNN and MSDNC. It'd be screaming from every issue of the NYT, the WaPo and the rest of Team Blue Pravda...
Here's the WSJ.
Here's Legal Insurrection.
This development really pisses me off. I'm more than willing to reserve judgment about this--or at least I have been willing. Now that we know the President did, in fact, call Hunter during his business meetings--and now that I've read a bit about how influence peddling works (here's Turley on the topic)--well, personally, I think they're dirty. I think the President of the United States, while VPOTUS, engaged in influence peddling on behalf of his drunken, drug-addicted, prostitute-uh....hiring...son. However...all I want is a fair and honest investigation. But apparently we're not going to get that.
The media has, once again, not merely been uncritical, it has been a partner in the collusion.
And now the Attorney General of the United States has appointed a pet prosecutor who has already cheated on behalf of the target of the investigation.
As Turley points out, the media keep moving the goalposts. This is their standard pattern now when it's Dems who are allegedly guilty of wrongdoing: ignore it until it can't be ignored any longer, then deny it until some element of it can't be denied any longer, then lie about it / explain it away with some lame-ass, obviously bullshit theory until that doesn't work anymore, then move the goalposts / raise the burden of proof to a point such that only a signed confession by the Democrat in question could possibly count as acceptable evidence. Last week we were asked to believe that Joe just called to talk about the weather...now we're told that none of this counts for anything unless we can actually see him taking money. Which sounds like bullshit to me. Influence peddling for your son is influence peddling just as much as doing so to line your own pockets.
However, at this point, I'd relish the opportunity to bet on the question "Did (Joe) Biden take some of the money?" Because, well, look: he did. But even if he didn't, he's still a crook.
I can't resist adding: I knew and said that Biden would be a terrible President. But he has exceeded my wildest expectations...

Did Biden Win the Election of '20 Roughly as the Soviets Won the Gold in Olympic Hoops in '73?

There's certainly a case to be made.
Hemmingway's book semi-convinced me of this view when it came out. I'd say that, to the extent that I have a fairly settled view on the subject, this is it: the blue team didn't win via mass electoral fraud...but they did win via cheating and expedients tantamount to cheating--the moral equivalent of cheating, we could, perhaps, say.
But this is the kind of topic that has so many hidden complications and relevant comparisons that it's easy to say stupid things about it.

"Gun Violence in Red and Blue"

Reasonable.
As I've noted, I have my doubts about "Constitutional"/permitless carry.
To pick a state totally at random: VA. You used to be able to get a CHP entirely online. Now you have to attend a 3-hour class that need not include any range time at all. At least in MO you have to be able to put something like three rounds in the silhouette from 7 yards--which can literally be done with your eyes closed.
I'm inclined not to give the left anything currently, and to open up new fronts against them wherever possible. I'm under the impression that catching young males illegally carrying is one of the most important ways of fighting crime in some places.
Anyway, I'm a skeptic about permitless carry.

The Stupidest Article You'll Read This Week: "Vivek Ramaswamy is a Wolf* in Sheep's Clothing"

I thought this was Yglesias at first. Now, Yglesias can't quite see his way past his progressive-leftism...though he does try. I actually respect the guy, and he is often reasonable and sometimes interesting. But this post is stupid and terrible...not out of the question as something MY might write...but I'd be a little surprised...
Anyway, the author seems to have two objections:
(a) Ramaswamy is conservative
(b) He is reasonable.
A dangerous and inexplicable combination! If he is elected, our "future is dark." Ahem...now...I just want to point out that, if a conservative had written that of a nonwhite progressive, the left would burn down Twitter. Oh, the panel discussions there would be! The demands for cancellation! The Woketarians would absolutely lose their shit...  Imagine Trump said it! Z0MFG!!!111 Teh RAZIZM! Teh YT SUPREMACY!!!!!!
Now, that's retarded. And of course I'd never stoop so stupid...
But that's basically all the progressive left amounts to.
So I'm not above mentioning it.
At any rate, this "dark future" involves such inhuman horrors as stopping mass illegal immigration, not brainwashing and sexually mutilating children, not indoctrinating people with CRT, ending DEI totalitarian bullshit, dumping climate change hysteria...the horror! The horror!
Basically returning the nation to something at least approximating sanity.
Anyway. There's nothing in that post worth reading. It's shit. I'm only posting on it because it's so damn stupid.

Andy McCarthy: The "Biden Brand" Racket

Whatever else you can say about Trump:
As in so many other cases, he was right about this.
and
He was impeached--the first time--for investigating it.
Trump is a loose cannon. He doesn't play the game that people like Biden play--maintaining a certain tone and demeanor while lying and lying and lying...and playing ideological and money games that are...concealed under those passably couth manners...a giant fuck you to Americans and America.
To be clear, this is not to defend all of Trump's words and actions. He really is a loose cannon. I continue to think that he doesn't have what it takes to be President. But he has blown the whistle on the blue team in a way that's never been done before.
Trump has been thwarted and hounded at every point--sometimes deservedly. But the whole time, the blue team's madness--at virtually every level and in every way--has been concealed and ignored.
The President of the United States is a crook, selling American power to the highest bidders. That happened right under our noses. The press protected him, because the press is a blue-team propaganda operation.
His opponent was impeached for trying to expose his criminality.
And the whole time, the whole vast, elite, progressive apparatus has chanted Orange Man Bad...Orange Man Bad...

Richard L. Hasan: U.S. v. Trump Will Be The Most Important Case In Our Nation's History

Move over Marbury v. Madison! Katzenbach v. McClung...Dred Scott...Plessy...Brown v. Board...
Out, out, damned pretenders!
Make way for U.S. v Orange Man!
Well, this is a view from the left sector.
It seems to me to be yet another manifestation of the left's conviction that the job of the courts is to achieve progressive political ends, law and arguments be damned.
As per usual, I just want justice to be done. I don't have a rooting interest in the outcome...well...other than that it would be convenient to get Trump out of the way, since (a) the Dems winning is now a disastrous outcome, and that will almost certainly still be true by November 2024, and (b) Trump is the only way the Dems win...
But we don't get to take that into account.
For sheer dark amusement value, a Trump versus Kamala contest would probably be best...God help us...

The Narcissism of the Fact-Checkers

Reporting, fact-checking, social media, and the "disinformation" industry form a significant part of the progressive echo-chamber.

Broken-windows theory is a bit like phonics, if you can believe it: we know it works, but it's politically incorrect.

American Law Enforcement Does Not Discriminate Against Blacks

This was proven years ago.
But the proof turns on a politically incorrect truth...a hatefact: that blacks commit serious, including violent, crimes, at a much higher rate than whites.

More on the COVID Lab-Leak Coverup Conspiracy (With Comments on Our General Predicament)

Two relevant aspects of contemporary progressivism:

A general, core principle of progressivism:
[1] Government should largely be conducted by experts.

Two facts about our current situation:
[2]  Many "experts" are not, in fact, experts.
[3]  The "elites" / the "expert class" has been ideologically captured by the left.

We've started to see how the sausage is made. An early glimpse was Climate Gate, the scandal surrounding the "hockey-stick graph." The most recent is the lab-leak conspiracy coverup. MaskGate was another small episode with the same structure: the experts/"experts" lied about the evidence/facts in order to manipulate the public into doing what the experts/"experts" thought we should do.
Another, even more egregious--and currently on-going--disaster concerns (trans)gender ideology. In this case, the core "experts"--academicians in obfuscatory, generally anti-scientific pseudo-disciplines like women's and gender studies, queer theory, etc.--are misrepresented as genuine experts, and their anti- and pseudo-scientific, speculative musings and ravings are misrepresented as something like science or even indisputable fact. These pseudo-disciplines are political-leftist at their core, and their purpose is largely activist. There is really no distinction between such "scholars" and activists. Together, they cook up often patently ridiculous theories (often something about something something social construction). The ideological capture of the softer sciences--including psychology, medicine and medical research--now means that the "scholar-activists" in the humanities and social sciences and grievance studies in between have a plausibly-scientific audience eager to adopt whatever nonsense they may output. This is "idea laundering": there is no wall between activism and scholarship in much of the humanities, social sciences, and grievance studies. The wall between scientists and such "scholar-activists" is more permeable by the week. Political preferences are dressed up as theories (usually in the jargon of recent Continental philosophy), handed over to leftist "researchers" in the softer / more politicized sciences, where they are declared The Science. "Science" then speaks, ex cathedra, to the public, informing the hoi polloi that black is white, night is day, and men are women.
And one more layer: the activists, "scholar-activists" and useful idiots on social media create a "cancel culture" that exerts psychological, social, political and financial (including career) pressure on anyone with the temerity to question "The" "Science."
You'd think this wouldn't work...but the system has evolved into a viciously effective means of thought- and social-control.
'Populism' is now a dirty word. But on one interpretation, it means: opposition to progressivism--i.e., opposition to government/control by "elites"/"experts." But the more incompetent and unbalanced the "elite" / "expert" class becomes, the more reasonable that brand of populism becomes.
   Etc., etc.

Turley: "The Biden Brand"--Devon Archer Reveals the Niceties of Influence-Peddling

I'm not skeptical about this anymore.
It's pretty clear where this is all going.
Of course I have no idea whether there's anything outright illegal here.
But I really hope the Pubs are spinning up their impeachment drives.
Somebody somewhere said this scandal was too big to break--because so many people in DC do this sort of thing.
That's too big for me to even think about right now.
I'll just stick with this smaller-but-still-huge conclusion for now: it sure as hell seems that the Bidens are crooks.

That One Line Kamala Keeps Saying

McCarthy and Turley: Latest Trump Indictments Weak Sauce

Colin Wright: Neil de Grasse Tyson Should Stick to Physics (Instead of Spouting Incoherent Gender Ideology)

NBC News: Some People Think They Can Change Their Race...and That's Just Crazy!

The mind, it reels...
The Rachel Dolezal case came to public attention right after the Bruce/Caitlyn Jenner case. It's rare that you get a real, live, real-world counterexample to a crazy view--and unheard of that you'd get it immediately... I thought: well, that's it; this "transgender" idiocy is done for...
   So: never listen to me...
Of course NBC can't say that you can change your race--that view was declared verboten. Dolezal was cancelled. The feminist philosophy crazies descended on Rebecca Tuvel...and just like that, the contradiction was suppressed. Official progressive doctrine: you can magically change your sex...er...gender...er...secret, internal gendersex feelz...whatever...but you can't magically change your race. Because, though race is not at all genetic, and totally a fiction and social construct and completely fake and not real and white supremacy...it is also genetic and you can't change it because you can't have people getting out of their evil, evil white guilt and whatnot and moving into a preferable, virtuous demographic just like that... I mean...that'd play havoc with reparations... Sex is also totally fake and made up and not real and a social construct...but not at all genetic, bigot, and you'd better not say otherwise because you CAN change from being a man to a woman AS THE SCIENCE HAS PROVEN but you can't change your genetics!
Fax!
Back when Jenner and Dolezal were big news together for like two weeks before Dolezal was shoved down the cancellation hole, I remember reading this post titled something like DON'T YOU DARE EVEN SUGGEST THAT TRANSRACIALISM IS LIKE TRANSGENDERISM, BIGOT, BECAUSE THAT VERY THOUGHT IS A HATECRIME...
I exaggerate, but not by much.
