Ramaswamy's Loathsome Ad

I was interested in VR for awhile. Read part of his book but lost interest. Didn't really know enough to form much of an opinion. His drug-company shenanigans sounded sort of slimy to me...but I don't know enough to say for sure.
I saw something about that ad the other day, though and...Jesus Christ... I mean, a lot depends on the actual facts of the case...but even a little bit of poking around seems to indicate that Acton's mom is shit...which makes the ad utterly beyond the pale. Though there's absolutely no reason for any legitimate political campaign to go there anyway. If Acton is/were such a liar, it would show up elsewhere.
Bad as it might be for Ohio...part of me kinda hopes VR gets stomped because of this.

Colin Wright, Andrew Hartz: The Inmates Run the Asylum at the American Psychological Association

I could literally not agree with this more.
The Psychology APA--like the Philosophy APA--has gone batshit crazy.
I especially agree with this bit:
The APA’s antisemitism problem might have captured the attention of the federal government for being a glaring example of ideological capture. But the purpose of accreditation is to guarantee more than the mere absence of one specific—albeit serious—form of discrimination. It is supposed to be an earnest commitment to professional competence, intellectual seriousness and standards worthy of public trust.
The Education Department should therefore ask whether a professional association so thoroughly committed to political activism should continue enjoying the government’s imprimatur as a guardian of psychological training. No amount of denying objectivity can shield it from those consequences.
So very right.
Antisemitism sucks...but it seems a bit crazy to me that a professional organization can go completely. fucking. insane, and be so thoroughly ideologically captured by a cultish, extremist political/cultural/intellectual faction...and that's just fine...and overtly bash men and Caucasians all the time...hell, turn it into an area of specialization...all dandy... But, hey, discriminate against a minority group...TOO FAR, MOFO...
I'm also worried that we're making the left stronger by agreeing to play their game at some level. We let them get away with becoming an arm of the left, and saying and doing utterly insane things...and only go after them over a kind of racial/ethnic discrimination. It's as if we're kind of agreeing with them that it's the worst thing--and the only thing--that's off limits...

Trump Fatigue, Episode MCXVIII

I'm sick to death of that guy.

Matthew Hennessey: France's Riots Are More Than Student Protests [Me: The Core Is Still Orwellianism]

This bit:
France’s days of rage look to these naked eyes like an immigrant revolt—some strange alliance of Muslim youth and communist grad students. The main thing they have in common is that they’re all unemployed.
France is officially a colorblind, secular republic. It collects no data on the racial or ethnic makeup of French society. Good estimates, however, put the foreign-born population of France at around 13%. Another roughly 12% are second-generation children of immigrants. That’s a full quarter of French society with a potentially deep ambivalence about living in a colorblind, secular republic.
These populations were overrepresented in the recent rioting. Yet decades of stultifying political correctness have robbed us of the ability to speak about the obvious. We censor our own thoughts. We stop ourselves from noticing things we can plainly see.
The last part, obviously, in particular.
Here are two related components of the madness of the left: the Orwellian insistence on not seeing what is before your nose...and the strictly-enforced norm on the left against speaking politically incorrect truths. This is a blueprint for disaster.
Imagine a ship run on PC principles: no noticing things on the list of unnoticeable things--e.g. shoals, storms, rogue waves--and no speaking of them either. No bringing them to anyone's attention.
This, quoting Peirce from a different context, is a complicated way of spelling 'shipwreck'...
No enterprise of any importance can succeed if run in accordance with these principles. These principles are specifically to prevent acknowledgement of truth and falsehood.
The left either believes that society and government are so frivolous (or so easy) that they needn't recognize facts...or they think that maintaining leftist ideological fantasies is more important than those things...or...here's another possibility: since one of their goals is wrecking Western Civilization...well...you see where I'm going with this...
I predicted the Dems would snap out of this a lot sooner than they have. My ad hoc hypothesis for explaining the failure of my prediction is: Trump. He's such a repellent figure in so many ways that he's keeping people on the left who, under different conditions, would have jumped ship by now. Thus forcing the left to return to the center or lose, lose, lose...
Though, OTOH, back in the PC "1.0" era, almost everyone I knew who considered himself a liberal stuck with the left no matter how insane it became...and there was no Trump then...
Well, anyway: at least we're not as royally f*cked as France...

0.5 Scaramuccis!

WSJ: To Russia, With Love, Signed Donald

link
I don't understand much about what's going on here. But I suppose the diesel deal doesn't anger me as much as it does others--and maybe not as much as it should.
I don't think either party should cut deals with our foreign enemies to gain advantage in elections...but I've gotta say...if it keeps control of the Senate out of the hands of the Dems by bringing down gas prices...I kinda want to allow it...
I know.
That's bad.
OTOH, the Euros were buying Russian oil hand over fist until Trump pitched a bitch about it...some still may be. Not sure...
Anyway: Trump certainly has a bug up his ass about Ukraine. I just don't get it. I don't think anybody gets it. Maybe it's just his contrarian nature. Maybe he's still sore about the Biden/Ukraine business. God knows.
Anyway, I think WSJ (and everybody else) is likely right about this one and I'm wrong.
But keeping Congress--and SCOTUS--out of the hands of the current, unhinged Dems is...extremely important.
That's my excuse.

John Ellis: Radical Professors Have Poisoned the Electorate

Ellis is basically right about academia, as usual.
I'm not sure about the causal link with DSA success, however.
There's some evidence that professors have little effect on their students' political views.
We should drain the swamp one way or the other--to be clear.

"Liberal Feel-Good Nostrums" Were Debunked by Social Science Long Ago

via Insty

The Bee: Man Frustrated by Gas Prices Votes to Start Castrating Kids Again

American Scientist: New Flash: Science Has Always Been Political

By one Adam Shapiro--no idea if he is speaking for the magazine (note: not a journal).
One set of crackpot biases infect this piece of shit from beginning to end.
There's no serious thought evident anywhere in the thing.
Oh...I'll just point out, ad hominem, that Mr. Shapiro is also the author of these fine-sounding pieces of "science-writing:"

Rank Injustice: What Your Favorite Music Says About Inequality in Science
What Science Writing Owes to Its Religious Origins
Executive Order Hinders Scientific Inquiry
Did Intelligent Design Just Miss Its Corona Moment?
The Dangerous Resurgence in Race Science
What We Get Wrong About the Evolution Debate

Despite the standard, strategic, rhetorical FUD the left loves to use to obscure its bullshit positions and arguments:

The real question is: is science inherently political?
The real answer is: no.
Science is separable from politics, and good science is almost always separated from it.
The left's arguments are--as usual--terrible..and no one would ever accept them if they didn't have a political agenda lying behind them...
Leftist philosophers (" ") commonly argue for the pure and most dangerous variety of the view: that scientific arguments and conclusion should be affected by ideological preferences.
Everything else is just noise.

Nature (er...the journal...): Is Science Political?

I fear I can discern their answer from the brief descriptions of the episodes...but I don't have time to listen to them. I hope I'd be surprised.

The Lancet: Science Should Be Political

Science has retardified itself.
This is something philosophy could actually have helped warn them against...but philosophy has done the same to itself.
In both cases, it's largely the result of these areas working with the left to further ideological capture.
First thing: what do you mean by Science is political?
Because the natural interpretation would be something in the vicinity of science is inherently political.
Which, of course, it is not.
Good science is apolitical--and some science is good science.
The drawing of the conclusion is left as an exercise for the reader.
The real problem is that the claim has no clear meaning. Does it mean that politics sometimes affects science? True...but it really can't mean that. It's implicitly universal. Science certainly affects politics...sometimes... Is that science being political? Or politics being sciencey? Or what?
The left loves to push the laughable claim that "everything is political."
Of course, however, almost nothing is political. The percentage of the universe that has anything at all of any importance at all to do with human political struggles and institutions is so near 0 that me might as well round to that. Humans have only even existed for a blink of an eye, in cosmic terms.
Of course it's always the left that pushes such absurd claims...because it wants and aims to politicize everything. And, when called on its bullshit, it defends it by claiming that everything is already political...so it's just a matter of which kind of political it will be...and, of course, the left's brand of political is allegedly (but not actually) preferable...
It's more or less at this point that the left starts confusing Everything is political with Anything might theoretically become fodder for political disagreement...which confusion is, yes, thermonuclearly retarded. But, having accreted around a core of bad Continental philosophy, pseudophilosophy, and literary theory, the left is nothing if not muddle-headed...
I should write something for real on this nonsense someday...

Oh and, of course: note that there is no reference at all to the left in the Lancet's editorial...despite the fact that the left has threatened to wreck science, off and on, since Lysenko...and it's probably never been closer to succeeding than it was during the "great awokening", perhaps peaking during the Biden administration. But who does get a personal shout-out as an enemy of science? Well, I'll leave that, too, as an exercise for the reader...

Columbia Journalism School hosts discussion of book arguing 'White America' was conditioned to lynch black children

There will, of course, be no genuinely critical comments...unless they're of the Hey, you missed some racism variety....which is to say: someone in the audience might seek to build some woke cred by making up some "racism" that the author didn't think of making up.
This is likely to be a particularly egregious example of such bullshit...but universities--including public universities--are filled with this stuff. Leftist bullshit pervades universities sort of like religion pervaded Medieval universities. Nobody bats an eye at patent propaganda masquerading as teaching and scholarship.

The Cornell 7 "Gang Rape" Case Falls Apart; MSM Continues to Lie About It

As I guessed:

The MSM is still spinning and dissembling to try to avoid the politically incorrect facts of the case.

James B. Meigs: Politicians Play Orwell's Word Games

Newspeak aims to control though by controlling language. Contra Syme in 1984, language cannot completely control thought--but as the left has demonstrated since the late '80s, it can be surprisingly influential. More recently: who would have predicted that the mere word 'transwoman' would have been as effective as it has been in encouraging acceptance of the patently contradictory idea male woman?
The left's late-'80s term for its main project was 'political correctness,' (PC) a term taken from '50s-era communists. Apparently less-radical communists used it to ridicule their more-radical colleagues: political correctness (ideological orthodoxy) stood opposed to--and trumped--regular old correctness--truth, factuality, rationality, validity. We call basically the same thing 'woke'--but PC is better, emphasizing what is truly important about the movement.
And, as Hannah Arendt has written: the abandonment of truth and reason central to PC is the true core of totalitarianism.
Anytime the left says "social justice"--now often just shortened to "justice"-- they actually mean leftist ideology--and the rest of us should always point this out. "Economic justice" would really be, e.g.: prosecuting shoplifting, vandalism of public property, fare evasion, fraud, theft, &c. It would also comprise "allowing" people to keep more of the money they earn. In fact, leftists mean: taking money from people who earned it and giving it to those who didn't...and: to the cronies and catspaws of the left.
Meigs is right--conservatives do it to. But on this score, their efforts are so puny and ineffective that it's almost misleading to even mention them. We should never suggest that they are at all comparable to those of the left. The left is an extremely linguistic and "intellectual" (in the bad sense) movement. That is: it's built on pseudoacademic bullshit and the manipulation of language and interpretation. The right has its own problems...but they aren't these. It's only somewhat of an exaggeration to say that the right's most famed attempt at Newspeak was 'freedom fries,' a jokey renaming of French fried in the Congressional cafeteria meant to poke France for refusing to go along with our ill-advised Iraq adventure. Hardly stacks up against 'transwoman' et al...

Galston: Rubio's Pagan Nationalism

Another great address by Rubio, IMO.
But Galston's cautionary point is an important one, I think.
Rubio could respond: of course I was emphasizing the Athens part of Athens and Jerusalem...

Gad Saad: Woketarian Associate Prof Elected Head of the APA (Psychology, not Philosophy)

(Incidentally, I have no idea who the president of the philosophy APA is...)

Her papers are all bullshit:

It used to be that you had to at least read the abstracts of psych papers to tell they were bullshit.
So in that respect, the Woketarians have streamlined things: now you can tell from the titles alone...

Santa Trump Wants to Buy Your Vote

Jesus Christ.

Make it stop.

Wilfred Reilly: When the Demand for Racism Exceeds the Supply

There are a few crucial principles/ideas that define the radical left, including the episodes on the American left known as PC and "woke." Two of them are:

[i] Leftist ideology trumps facts

and

[ii] America is inherently/essentially/overwhelmingly racist.

Only [i] makes it possible for them to continue to accept and promote [ii].

I know many smart, reasonable, reasonably well-informed people on the left. But most of them simply cannot seriously criticize the left. Whatever their virtues, they cannot do more than issue the occasional half-hearted criticism of the left...and they absolutely cannot agree with the right in any but the most pro forma ways. Agreeing with Trump, of course, right out...

I think any reasonable left-leaning person who honestly reflected on this incident would have a kind of epiphany. The passionate desire to find racism where there is none...and where there obviously is none...is telling to say the least...

I tried to take these incidents seriously--just in case--but it was obvious from the get-go that they were almost certainly not lynchings. But the establishment fomented hysteria...until it became undeniable that it was all the utterest bullshit...

Here's the pattern, of course: they fan the flames of hysteria on the thinnest pretext...and fan and fan and fan...but it becomes more and more obvious that it's bullshit...then, eventually, they see it's not going to work (note: it's not that they stop because they recognize their claims are false...it's that they recognize their efforts aren't working...though they're not working largely because they turn out to be false)...and the project slowly fades away...

...of course they never admit error...and some of the hysteria sticks.

So, from their perspective, it was worth it.

Not optimal, of course--because they have been unsuccessful in creating another George Floyd incident and sparking "The Revolution"...

But it's a step in the right (i.e. wrong) direction...

Over and over and over the left tries the same basic ploy--interspersed with other old favorites (see e.g. the Cornell "gang rape") and the occasional new idea (e.g. let us sexually mutilate your child or he'll kill himself).

Madness.

Another Absolutely Stellar Address by Rubio

I am, yet again, amazed.

TDS Watch: Trump / Iran / Nuking CA

The general insanity of the left comes from its inextricable association with recent Continental philosophy. Relevant here is "the death of the author"--you can interpret any "text" (which means: anything at all) any way you want. Because authors' intentions are irrelevant, and every interpretation is as good/bad as every other...

Daft, retarded relativism.

TDS Watch: Trump Did Not Invite Iran to Nuke California

The real story here is that, even after a decade of the left and the MSM generally lying about Trump and the things he says...I briefly wondered whether this one might be true...
Though, it's to some extent on Trump...because...who knows what they guy might say? After threatening to invade Greenland...well, who knows, I guess?
And, again: if Trump's so terrible, why does the left have to lie--again and again and again--about the things he says? He really does say plenty of crazy shit, after all...

Your Blue Future: Seattle "Zombie" Bites Chunk Out of Woman's Forehead

In Memoriam: Tom Hill

link (scroll down)

I tried to post something when Tom died, but I just gave up.
He really was an exceptional person.
I could go on and on about him. I only took one course from him, and, since I migrated out of ethics after my first year, he wasn't on either of my committees. But we were actually reasonably close--in the way that many students were tight with many profs at Carolina at the time. The atmosphere, back in the day (ca. mid-'80s - mid-'90s) was just great. I had many good discussions with Tom, and mostly remember just hanging out and talking about philosophy in the coffee room. Tom and Robin were also tight with other professors who I was tight with--and who were on my committees. They all lived out around Chatham county, where Mike Resnik got me into road biking the summer before I shoved off for a job.
   Well, anyway.
Someday, maybe, I'll try to write something.
Tom really was just a helluva guy.

Joe Nocera: Last Night, College Athletes Lost [when the "Protecting College Sports" act was passed]

I don't know what to think about all this.
I can say: I think college athletes probably deserve to make what they're worth.
And also: I don't like college sports anymore.
I guess the illusion of amateurism was necessary for my enjoyment of them.
I've never cared much about football, actually, but I've absolutely loved college hoops (I went to Carolina for grad school, after all).
I also think that football is too expensive--and I kinda think it's too violent. Hell, I like the UFC...and football's often a bit much for me. So I'm a wimp in that respect. A lot of those hits just seem over the top to me...
But anyway.
Universities aren't what they're supposed to be anymore. They're more like some kind of crazy businesses that I barely understand anymore--despite having spent my life in them.
OTOH, you can argue: by turning them into what they now are, more people are more educated than they would otherwise be...
Though if we go down that road, we sort of need to talk about grade inflation, the general crapification of universities, ideological capture by the left...etc.
Hell, I don't know what to think.

Elon

Election Time On the Senate Races

Nail-biter:

Alan Dershowitz: "Why I Left the Democratic Party--And Why California Voters Should, Too"

link:
I think the Democratic Party today is the most dangerous party in my lifetime. I lived through McCarthyism, and the latter stages of segregation. But I’ve never lived in a more dangerous time for civil liberties, decency or meritocracy.
I'm a generation behind Dersh, so I didn't live through McCarthyism. But I have seen--since I've been old enough to know what was going on--widespread communist apologism, anti-communist extremism, the rise of the religious right, political correctness, the lie-up to the Iraq war, and Trump...and, yeah, the rise of the Woketarian cult is the most dangerous of the lot, IMO...and that's the problem with the Dems: they capitulated to the lunatic left. And I agree with him that this is the most dangerous time (in the last 50+ years) for civil liberties, decency, and meritocracy...but, more importantly: for sanity and reason.
Stop me if you've heard this one: it's the Orwellianism of the left that's the biggest threat.
Trump plays so fast and loose with the truth that you can basically just ignore what he says when he's on one of his rolls...
But the postpostmodern left has conducted a decades-long campaign to subvert the very ideas of truth and reason, in favor of a kind of cultish, totalitarian politics that subordinates everything to hard-left dogma. They repeat their leading ideas ad nauseam: science is political, the personal is political...everything is political. The latter, in particular, is like a mind virus that people brainlessly repeat having given it exactly no serious thought. It's bad enough that it's laughably false...but it's also the left's excuse for politicizing everything. Criticize them for politicizing the news media, and their response is: everything is political! Get it? They can't be criticized for replacing accurate, objective journalism with leftist propaganda...because that's the way it has to be...there is no alternative. Everything's already political anyway...so all they can do is try to make it reflect the correct politics...i.e. leftist politics...
   What a crock of shit.
The vast majority of the universe is apolitical. The percentage the is political is so small as to be effectively zero. Zoom in on Earth, and even just on human life, and the percentage that is inherently political is very small indeed--even from the perspective of a politics-obsessed nerd like myself. Most of my life--and almost all of the truly important things in it--are non-political.
What the leftists respond to this is, basically, that, for almost any x you can name, you can imagine it becoming a matter of political controversy. The trees in my front yard theoretically could, for example. But, of course, that doesn't mean that the trees in my front yard are political. They are not essentially political. Though they could become contingently so. Is science political? Well, the question is ill-formed. Science itself? Inherently? Or have some things about science become embroiled in politics in various ways? The left doesn't even know what it's saying. They're very good at being unclear. Here's the fact: politics should not influence scientific reasoning. It should not influence which conclusions science draws. That's the issue. And it's easily settled.
Eh, I gotta get to work. I don't have time to ridicule this stupid bullshit to the degree it deserves.

[But anyway:
Trump's a loose cannon, the Pubs are doing nothing to control him, it's a giant mess...but his administration continues to produce good policy and to undertake long-overdo initiatives...and the Dems remain in the thrall of the Orwellian left...and now the socialists, too. One of the best things Trump did was give us a good SCOTUS. But Thomas and Alito are old. We absolutely cannot afford to lose the Senate now. Imagine a court with two more Sotomayors...or, saints preserve us, KBJs...
The best thing we can do right now is minimize the power of the left--which means minimizing the power of the Dems.
I still expect the Dems to return to sanity someday...but not any day soon....]

WSJ: The U.S. Economy is Accelerating (?)

I have no understanding of any of this.
