Michael Cleveland and Flamekeeper: Lee Highway Blues

When The Atlantic Goes Soft on The Lab-Leak Hypothesis...

...you know which way this discussion is headed...
Progressives are still dragging their feet. They really, really, really do not one the extremely politically incorrect, totally tinfoil hattish, completely impossible, bigly racist LLH to be true...nor to even be admissible into the discussion as a hypothesis...but it looks like they're just not able to keep it out anymore.
Cracks are starting to appear in Fortress PC... They're even having a hard time suppressing opposition to gender ideology these days, with stories of young "detransitioners" cropping up everywhere. DEI is on the defensive.
Maybe the madness is going into remission.

"10 Myths of COVID Now Debunked"

I'm not so sure about some of these, but the overall point seems clearly right: certainty was projected when it seemed clear even at the time that it was unwarranted. In a lot of cases it was also unclear to me to what extent it was the media and other non-scientific/non-public-health entities pushing the bogus certainty.

Three Years Late, The Lancet Recognizes Natural Immunity

Jeez, another real shocker here.

DoE Concludes Lab-Leak Hypothesis Most Likely

This has always been the most likely hypothesis given the publicly-available information.
DoE draws its conclusion with "low confidence."
[Other agencies have drawn contrary conclusions.]
Of course the zoonotic hypothesis could still turn out to be right. The facts are the facts, and the facts can surprise you. I have no ideological commitment here. Because that would be crazy.
But the real scandal, the undeniable scandal, is--as is so often the case these days--the left's ideological irrationality and Lysenkoism about this question. As per usual, the progressive left picked a side on the basis of ideology, declared it "The Science," and declared any questioning thereof to be misinformation, conspiracy theory, and, of course, as goes without saying: racist.
They leapt immediately into the fray, early in 2020, with the PC terminological stupidity for which they are justly infamous, declaring "China virus" to be--well, you know: raaaacist!!!11 Also, uh, STIGMA!
Needless to say, Trump was racist for using the racist, racist terminology.
In part, the vanguard of the progressive left seems to actually believe this sort of thing. In part, they just like telling people what they can say and do. In part they want to assert, as often as possible, that they control our vocabulary and set the rules of public discussion--which is in itself, a good reason to defy them. I prefer 'Wuhan virus'. And 'Deadly Batflu'... Of course 'Wuhan virus' is in accordance with well-established naming conventions--see e.g. 'Spanish flu,' 'Ebola,' 'Lyme disease,' etc. etc.
When we should have been honestly evaluating the evidence of its origin, the PC left was screeching about which words to use--and covertly arguing that the lab-leak hypothesis basically couldn't be true...because that would be racist...
And that's the real scandal, as Turley notes.
Or, rather, the real scandal is the general politicization of epistemic--including scientific--questions. The progressive left is Lysenkoist. They declared the lab-leak hypothesis a conspiracy theory / "tin-foil hat territory," racist, etc...basically on the basis of a vague hunch that it was kinda politically incorrect.
And the lab-leak theory is small potatoes compared to political correctness with respect to alleged racism in policing, gender ideology, climate change and the rest. In each case they've picked an answer epistemically at random, on the basis of political preference, and declared that it cannot be questioned.
This madness has to stop.

Speaking of Sophistry About Race--Here's That Vox Video Again

I can't resist posting this every couple of years just because it is so unbelievably idiotic. Every argument in this thing is invalid--with the possible exception of one inconsequential one that shows up at one point. And that one's questionable...
And then there's the over-the-top vocal fry of the narrator...which is pretty much perfect for this thing.
  Vox...sophomoric, faux-scientific arguments for a progressive article of faith...vocal fry...and don't miss the pseudo-intellectual confidence and condescension...jeez, what a package...:

McGill University's Office of Science and Society: Race Sophistry

This is something like the tenth article I've seen peddling race antirealism that's composed of the same collection of fallacious arguments. We find the same idiotic arguments over and over and over. Though there is a bit of variation... From the McGill thing:
In fact any two unrelated human beings on the planet are 99.9% identical in their DNA sequence. Only 0.1% varies, and here’s the most important takeaway message from all this. It also happens to be the most replicated finding in the scientific literature on human variation.
Of this 0.1% that varies, almost all of it (95.7% to be exact) is found between individuals within the same race. Despite what our eyes perceive, there is more genetic diversity within a race than between races
If you didn’t know that, don’t worry: you’re in good company. Three out of four college students taking an introductory course in biology and genetics also do not know this.
Tha's right...a textbook instance of Lewontin's fallacy, flanked by two even more idiotic arguments. Not that the last ridiculous argumentum ad sophomorum is really an argument...
And, of course, it wouldn't matter even if humans were 99.9% genetically "identical." (Actual degree of genetic similarity: about 98.4%.) What matters is whether humans fall into groups with clusters of phenotypic and genotypic traits. Which we do. Which is to say: races are natural kinds. Which is to say: races are real.
Incidentally, by some estimates dogs and wolves are 99.9% similar...but they're different species.
Go ahead and try to google this stuff, incidentally. Aside from an Atlantic article by Nicolas Wade, what you'll find--even if you search for "races are biologically real"--is a torrent of sophistical bullshit arguing that races aren't real--that is: not natural kinds.
This is, of course, Lysenkoism/political correctness. The arguments and evidence clearly indicate that races are real groupings, with genetic bases. And this has been clear for quite some time. But this conclusion is politically incorrect, so it's deeply suppressed while politically correct nonsense is tarted up as if it were science.

CJR's Russiagate Postmortem Ignores Independent Journalists Who Got It Right All Along

True.
The ruling faction controls what information most people get. The MSM ignored the work of Aaron Mate, Taibbi, Greenwald--and Jeff Gerth. I don't think I was aware of the latter's work, either.
Even the CJR story is being squelched, though.
And, I think: they don't have to squelch it forever. They probably can't. They just have to minimize its impact long enough to take the edge off. I'd use the Venona decrypts as an analogy: so what if it comes out 50 years on that Joe McCarthy was right? That information is basically politically intert now. (Right--to be clear--in the sense that many of his accusations were true. Not necessarily in the sense that they were justified.*)

* Also, I must add, for the vindictively tribal: saying he was right in no way suggests that he was a good dude.

Jamie Reed: "I Thought I Was Saving Trans Kids. Now I'm Blowing The Whistle"

This is an insane catastrophe. It was clear that it was an insane catastrophe from the beginning. It all began with obvious falsehoods--in fact, material contradictions: that women can be male and men can be female. This is political correctness: the subordination of truth to politics. When PC invades science it is Lysenkoism. No even vaguely rational person can believe such things. But the radical progressive left now controls our public discussions and our institutions. They badgered and bullied people into line by shrieking hysterically at anyone who failed to mouth their nonsensical jargon, slogans and dogmas--"transwomen"..."transwomen are women!"...etc. No one on my campus would dare question gender ideology out loud--if you did, you'd be subject to massive blowback--i.e. "cancellation." We have an office dedicated to advancing gender ideology. One can ask them to dispatch apparatchiks to indoctrinate one's classes with it. Many professors undoubtedly do. The ability of the politically correct left to force our institutions to adopt patent absurdities en masse is horrifying and virtually impossible to believe. Yet here we are. As in the days of paleo-PC in the late '80s-early '90s, one key component of the insane left's political power is relatively more centrist left--which is unwilling ever to contradict the radical left, and even more unwilling to side with the right. Without the cowardice and tribalism of the relatively more centrist left, the radical progressive left would be virtually powerless.
Radical progressives have been able to take over in part because few are willing to stand up for the importance of truth. Political correctness is the progressive view is that "social justice" and the feelings of the allegedly oppressed trump truth. I've heard innumerable people online and in person ask some version of the question "why do you care?" That is: why do you care that gender ideology is false? Feelings and alleged oppression matter; mere truth does not. Why on Earth would anyone care about the mere fact that our institutions have all adopted patently absurd falsehoods that none of us are permitted to question?
But facts matter. They matter in and of themselves, regardless of their positive or negative consequences.
Though blatant lies and falsehoods, and blatant disregard for truth do tend to have bad consequences. If you reject the evidence and disregard obvious truths--not to mention accepting and acting on patent absurdities--you are playing dice with respect to the consequences. Sometimes such irrationality can have pleasant consequences--but that's a crap shoot. At best.
And now we are seeing what was predictable all along--the horrific consequences of accepting an absurd, bizarre. politically correct fantasy radically at odds with reality. Children are being sexually mutilated. It's the Satanic Panic Part II: but this time it's real, and the cultists control almost all our institutions, including the media, universities, and medicine. This time the sexual abuse and mutilations are actually happening--and we are conducting them. Question the cult--question their abuse and sexual mutilation of children--and they will come for you. So people in a position to stop this are silent--or enthusiastically pro-cult. Conservatives openly deride and question the madness--but no one in power cares what they think. They are powerless. And, in fact, their very opposition strengthens the resolve of the left, and bolsters their refusal to see the plain facts before their eyes.
If "mere" truth were the only thing at issue, these absurdities might just win out in the end. If they don't, it won't be because of our regard for truth, but because of the undeniably horrific consequences of the falsehoods.
History will not be kind to us--nor should it be.

Russia Says Russia Has Unstoppable SAM!!!111

And why would Russia lie about this?

Washington Examiner: Guns Are Not A Public Health Crisis

Medical mission creep / the medicalization of everything + the left's ideological capture of universities (including med schools) gives them the influence they need to run one of their standard scams in this case: guns have effects on people's health --> guns are a public health problem --> doctors and public health officials are the experts on such problems --> they say to ban guns --> the experts have spoken / follow the science!

Amtrak Joe Couldn't Be Bothered to Visit the Palestine, OH, Train Wreck (Hurr Durr)

How does the fact that he used to talk a lot about riding Amtrak give him some special obligation to personally go to the site of the wreck? And this demand that Presidents personally inspect incidents about which they have no expertise...just generally dumb, IMO. And, as everyone knows, a Presidential visit often just complicates things for people on the ground who do know what they're looking at and what they're doing.
The left's kneejerk stampede to blame Trump, is, indeed, stupid as hell. But that's a different point.
The other party can always bitch and moan about the President not personally laying eyes on whatever the Bad Thing Du Jour is. Tiresome and dopey, seems to me.

MTG: National Divorce

Unfortunately, I can no longer say that the idea is completely crazy...but we're not there yet. Splitting up the union would, obviously, be better than living in a nation ruled by the Woketarian left. But I simply don't believe that the fat part of the left half of the political curve won't come to its senses sooner than later. What do you think's going to happen on the left in two or three more years when massive numbers of teenage girls start waking up to the fact that the gender-crazed left + the medical community helped them / talked them into doing irreversible damage to their bodies? How long before the crime rate--driven by "depolicing" / "decarceration", Soros-backed prosecutors, etc. becomes intolerable? How many $billions can be poured down the sinkhole of decarbonization and green energy? Can universities even survive another ten years of aggressive Lysenkoism and DIE racialization/politicization?
I'm not one of those who thinks that Woketarianism is already dying, nor that it will inevitably die. But I do think that the odds of an insane, cultish ideology keeping the USA in its grip forever seem pretty slim. In fact, I'm skeptical that this madness can last another decade. If Trump had been able to keep his damn mouth shut and keep his little bitty thumbs off the Tweeter, Betsy De Vos might be well on her way to saving academia by now... And it certainly seems as if DeSantis is ready to clean da house if he's elected next year. And if the academic bubble pops, I think things could change pretty fast.
And, should the insane progressive, identitarian left continue its Long March Through Our Institutions...well, then reds would, obviously, have to split from blues. But I don't think that will happen.
We managed to keep the Union together through worse--though perhaps not strictly speaking more insane--times than these. I'm certainly not ready to give up on it yet.
We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.

Brandolini's Law

Brandolini's law, also known as the bullshit asymmetry principle, is an internet adage that emphasizes the effort of debunking misinformation, in comparison to the relative ease of creating it in the first place. It states that "The amount of energy needed to refute bullshit is an order of magnitude bigger than that needed to produce it."

Neil Winton: "When I Covered Climate Change for Reuters, I Thought CO2 Was Certainly to Blame for Climate Change. I Was Wrong."

This seems right on the money to me.
That's to say: though I obviously didn't cover climate change for a major news organization, I simply accepted the prevailing story. Once I started actually looking into it, my mind changed. Now I think people like Koonin and Lomborg and Judith Curry are likely right. That's to say: my own arc is just like Winton's. I'm the furthest thing from an expert on the subject, but, were I forced to bet, I'd bet a fair amount of money that we're being railroaded.
One reason I think this is that I know we're being railroaded with respect to some issues I do understand well or fairly well: gender ideology, various kinds of "social constructionism," race and CRT, Trump, "diversity"/DEI. Doxastic/epistemic railroading is one of the progressive left's M.O.s. And I've learned enough about the climate change debate to recognize significant similarities. I'd say the same about COVID, though perhaps with somewhat less certainty: left and right took opposing sides on the severity of COVID and on the vax, masks, and lockdowns. Progressivism adopted its standard approach: fabricate or exaggerate a crisis, then argue that only leftist policy preferences constitute rational responses--in fact, they're essential. Without them, we'll ahve real wrath of God type stuff--fire and brimstone coming down from the skies...rivers and seas boiling. Forty years of darkness...earthquakes. Volcanoes. Human sacrifice. Dogs and cats living together. Mass hysteria!
Anyway. I say that Winton's right on target.

Rolling Stone: Why Cancel Culture Is Good For Democracy

As you can see, the left is about to move from its Standard Phase I Defense:

That thing you think we're doing does not exist / we are not doing it

To Standard Phase II Defense:

That thing you think we're doing DOES exist / we ARE doing it--but it is good.
In this case, cancel culture--which used to be a figment of the right-wing mind / a fascist fantasy / etc., has now been decreed real--and, of course, good. Well, actually, leftist started nudging cancel culture toward Phase II well over a year ago. So it joins other formerly-fictional but now-good leftist phenomena/organizations like political correctness, Antifa, CRT, CRT in schools, gender ideology, and various kinds of sexual mutilation of minors.
There's actually a Phase III: It's Essential! (E.g.: (a) it's impossible to teach anything about the history of race in America without teaching CRT and (b) we have to sexually mutilate the children or they will kill themselves.) But I just roll that into Phase II as a sub-phase.
And, of course, cancel culture is just accountability! Which is why it's good!
Jesus, you really can't make this stuff up...

It participated in the Russiagate hoax, then it helped cover it up, now it's lying about the Durham investigation.

Though now the same forces that perpetrated the hoax have switched to full-bore propaganda targeting the Durham investigation itself. Google it for a taste of the hysteria...

Progressives and the MSM will shuffle you into the "Hitler-of-the-month club" basically overnight.

Schiff Freaks Over Release of Capitol Riot Tape

So this isn't rocket science. We already know what we'll find. Just about all the worst footage has already been released. The rest will mostly show people peacefully milling about.
Of course, peacefully milling about is what people are supposed to do in the Capitol. So it's the violent freak-out part that's most important. Let's hope the Pubs don't keep flirting with the Dem's lame defense strategy re: the Mostly Peaceful Social Justice Riots For Peace And Justice...but they probably will. And, granted, it's not a completely weigthless defense. The less violence there was and the more peaceful milling, the less plausible the insurrection claim. Re: the MPSJRPJ: there was a helluva lot more violence. something like 20-30 murders, $1-$2 billion in property damage, and a long siege of a Federal building...
My own view about the Capitol riot is that it was a shameful and disgusting incident--but not very insurrectiony. Not completely not insurrectiony, though. Mostly innocent milling, plus some repulsively idiotic violence, plus a some weak, unarmed insurrection cosplay...plus one kinda sorta murder of a rioter. And some incidental deaths because of medical conditions. Which all adds up to an appalling, loathsome trainwreck. A black eye to the Republic. And 100% more insurrection than there should have been. But nothing that should ever be uttered in the same breath as 'Pearl Harbor' or '9/11'. As should go without saying.
But I could change my mind on this.
And I could be wrong about the videos--but I'm probably not.

Bill Gates's "Common Core" Promotes Wokefication and Bureaucratization of Schools

link
I've become more skeptical of government in large part because I've come to believe that basically any new initiative will be ideologically captured by the left. The PC left is a relentless cult, and its totalitarian ideology contains within it principles that drive its relentless expansion, and the take-over of any institution it touches. Furthermore, bureaucracies etc. seem to naturally grow/expand/bloatify. If I were in charge of the country, and there were a push to start a new bureau/agency/whatever, I wouldn't give it the green light unless were basically something that we simply could not do without. Because it's going to turn into an institutional Jabba the Hutt...
This may actually be how humanity comes to its end. An ideological virus has evolved that takes over social institutions--and social organization is arguably our greatest general type of achievement. And now we face the institutional analog of a massive, malicious computer virus. The contemporary left seems almost built for the Long March Through the Institutions. I'm concerned that this will never go away--that the battle to prevent the leftist takeover of institutions may never end.
Or, well...(lol...Orwell...)...that's the pessimistic thought that strikes me this morning, anyway. FWIW.

Debbie Hayton: Can The NYT Resist the "Trans" Backlash?

Well they can...

"Approximately Zero:" On Masks and Batflu

You should have heard the shrieking when the administration dropped the mask mandate at my university last year. The woke faculty's position is basically: if the CDC recommends masks, we should force people to wear masks. And if the CDC does not recommend masks, we should also force people to wear masks.
[wailing] BECAUSE THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!!
That is: some faculty have children, and are irrationally afraid of picking up the Wuhan bug on campus, and don't trust their own multiple-vaxation--and often multiple maskation--to protect them. So everybody else should also have to wear masks that don't work--and get vaxes that don't impede transmission--so that the kids aforementioned--who, speaking of approximately zero--are at basically no risk whatsoever from the deadly batflu--don't get it.

Two Woke Authoritarians Make Their Exits

Good riddance to Ardern and Sturgeon.

Leiter: Do "Diversity Statements" Violate Academic Freedom?

Of coruse they do.
Leiter writes:
I found it constructive and illuminating; it made clear that a key point of difference is about whether "diversity" is an extramural or intramural purpose of higher education. I think it is clearly the former: the essential purpose of universities is the production and dissemination of knowledge (i.e., research and teaching). Universities have over time been enlisted (or enlisted themselves) in various social causes, from anti-communism to the "war effort," to diversity. These are extramural; we can debate the wisdom of universities committing themselves to these social policies, but their having done so does not give them a right to corral faculty time and effort for the same purpose.

The Woketarian Left Declares the Woketarian NYT Insufficiently Woke re: Transgenderism

One advantage we wishy-washy centrists have is that radicals tend to eat their own.
This letter is signed by hundreds (thousands?) of NYT contributors and various others.
Since it's an attack from the NYT's left, it doesn't violate Kerensky's dictum (No enemies to the left)
The NYT, having very occasionally failed to toe the very most radical line on (trans)gender ideology, is a traitor in the eyes of all its even-truer-believing comrades.
Thus far the Times seems to be standing up to this nonsense--but we'll see.

Here's a hilarious early paragraph from the letter:
The newspaper’s editorial guidelines demand that reporters “preserve a professional detachment, free of any whiff of bias” when cultivating their sources, remaining “sensitive that personal relationships with news sources can erode into favoritism, in fact or appearance.” Yet the Times has in recent years treated gender diversity with an eerily familiar mix of pseudoscience and euphemistic, charged language, while publishing reporting on trans children that omits relevant information about its sources.
I mean...it's actually true that the NYT's coverage has been largely a matter of parroting transgender pseudoscience in said pseudoscience's own preferred euphemisms ("gender affirming" is merely the most Orwellian recent addition to the TransNewspeak lexicon)...  It's a real measure of the delusional nature of the PC left that it is able to convince itself that unavoidably obvious, rationally obligatory criticisms of its fantastical theories are themselves pseudoscientific...
Super busy these days, so I've just been gesturing at this stuff and moving on. But this one may be worth ridiculing in detail.
