I won't be surprised at all if this is right.
OTOH...one can't but be a bit cynical. Suspicions about Trump? WELL: he was obviously guilty! And where there's smoke there's fire and we need a two-year, multi-million-dollar investigation and even when he's cleared he must be guilty of something...   Buut...suspicions about the government spying on Trump? Move along, nothing to see here, absurd to waste any time on this...trust us it's nothing...this op-ed should explain it all and then let's just drop it...
I'm certainly willing to believe it...but only after an investigation.
And we know that the NYT and WaPo et al. have a dog in this fight. We know they're giving us a partisan version of the story. So we always have to try to estimate how much counter-spin to put on what we get from them. I certainly haven't figured out how to do that with any real precision.
