Well, scratch that.

Maybe it's more dishonest than stupid.

Imagine that a weird, freakish Baptist sect--or Scientology--suddenly took over the GOP and all our institutions--government, K-12,  universities, journalism, publishing, the military, Hollywood and the rest of pop culture... And suppose it labeled everyone to the left of the very far right sinners--and held that the eradication of sin was the main--perhaps the only--goal. Suppose you had to sit through "training" sessions to be indoctrinated in the new unofficial state religion. Suppose your kids were being brainwashed about it from kindergarten...

   Now: suppose the Democrats opposed this madness.

   Suppose, of course, that they were labeled sinners on account of that. Many lost their jobs or were kicked out of school...

   Now suppose some jackass wrote an article for the Atlantic about the Democrats' "obsession" with the new cult...

   I mean, hey, it's just a theological theory! It's just a way of looking at the world!

   Imagine said jackass writing sentences analogous to those...

   Really, the progressive left has just absolutely fucking lost its mind.

[Oh and, update: no court is going to overturn a ban on indoctrination. The free speech issue points the other way: being forced to sit and listen while you're indoctrinated into a view you disagree about will be ruled some kind of free-speech-like violation. They'll overturn any law that prevents discussion of a view--but that's very different.]
