So what causes this?

Now it's largely just a fad--or, rather, it's such the orthodoxy that these people getting up and saying this stuff...it's no more puzzling than people standing up at church and testifying. Everybody's doing it...emotions are running high...monkey see, monkey do...you don't want to stand out as the one person who doesn't love diversity Jesus with all your heart...do you?

But what brought it all on in the first place? 

I've sometimes thought: people get bored with their profession. They start out as philosophers or historians, but decades in they yearn for something different...something exciting...something easy, for Chrissake... And political correctness / SJWness  is nothing if not easy. No dreary sifting through old documents...no worries about the objective soundness of your arguments...just proclaiming your virtue to the world, free-associative "arguments," and making up new words! 'Microaggression'! 'Transmisogynoir'! 'BIPOC'! 

It's irrationality on parade. My God, the sanctimony...
