U.S. COVID-19 Mortality Rate Looks Pretty Bad
It does seem that our death rate per capita has been pretty bad.
The media didn't focus on this rate until it looked worse than other measures--because they're terrible and dishonest--but it does seem to be the right measure. Trump apparently wants to emphasize deaths per case, which seems like a decent but less-informative measure, because managing the spread is also something that can (it seems) be done well or badly.
Overall it's hard to tell how well Trump has done--for some ordinary reasons and some specific to Trump. Ordinarily, few of us have any real idea how much control any president actually has or could have over most situations. As for factors specific to Trump: the relentless media lies and their devotion to making everything look as bad as possible if they think there's any chance of it reflecting badly on Trump.
But, anyway, at least we have a measure here that seems informative, and it seems to indicate that the government did a rather bad job, for its part--and (rightly or wrongly) our practice is to lay some of that at the feet of he President.
Something like 25% of the total is attributable to Cuomo's disastrous policies that crammed COVID patients into retirement homes...but that's a whole 'nuther can o' worms, so I won't try to figure out how to modify this conclusion by taking that into account.
Anyway, as usual, I'm just a semi-well-informed layperson, and I'm just reporting on the way this seems to me.
