One interesting thing about cases like this is that they illustrate the fact that, for many classes of assertions, there's often no clear way to determine what percentage is lie and what percentage is delusion. It's really a kind of descending spiral in which a willingness to believe the worst about your opponents leads you to lie about them and to believe your own lies in some massively complicated feedback loop.

This is one of the phenomena that is most characteristic of the loony wing of the contemporary GOP: they aren't satisfied with disagreeing with their opponents, nor even with exaggerating their actual foibles. Rather, they aren't satisfied until they've spun out and in some sense accepted a fantasy in which their opponents are thoroughly evil, irrational and anti-American.
