Incidentally, I'm not sure that he was protected directly because of his race. When you become beloved of the academic Brahmin class...well, you're in, man. You're in. Academic superstars and those with connections...there just seem to be different rules for such people. Being a young, black allegedly disabled superstar in an extremely lefty discipline--those all helped him gain the favor of the establishment...but he might possibly have been able to pull off something similar even if he were white. If, say, he claimed to be "trans" or something...

   But there's no doubt that he race was a huge factor.

   Note also that he wasn't fired--he quit.

   Though, TBF, he seems to have quit because he was finally going to be investigated--so that's something.
