Biden's Proposed Cancellation of $10k of Student Loan Debt
I've read some about the relevant issues, but don't really understand much of the terrain. I'm against--but not inveterately against--cancellation of all student loan debt. $10k doesn't strike me as being utterly daft or anything, though. Tuition does seem to be ridiculous now. And one can reasonably argue that students and their parents got sucked into a maelstrom they didn't really understand. But I'm inclined to think (as some of the authors of the short arguments mention) that this has to be paired with some kind of action to genuinely mitigate the problem. I tend to find the Bennett hypothesis plausible...but, speaking objectively, apparently we just don't know why tuition went through the roof. At any rate, if TBH is true, forgiving debt will make the core problem worse by more-or-less making money cheaper.
But I can't pass up the chance to say: we could easily cut out hundreds of thousands of dollars of leftist "diversity" (or DEI...or DIE...or IED...) brainwashing and related bullshit. Every year. Worse than wasting money, it's brainwashing, it's intellectually dishonest, it's politically non-neutral, and it's antithetical to the telos of the university. I say do that first...
