The Problem With Progressivism Is That It's Cool
I mean, it's hard for me to see that anymore...but I guess it is.
And that shared demeanor and sensibility lets them get away with stuff they should never be able to get away with.
But throwing out the kind of nonsense you hear at the Oscars--stuff about global warming and indigenous rights and "me too"....that counts as cool, and so you can just say it, and the cool kids will nod in agreement.
Try getting up there and saying, e.g.:
In our quest for personal sexual freedom, we've allowed ourselves to wander into territory that is hedonistic at least and perhaps even nihilistic; sometimes a bit of reflection and self-restraint can be better than completely unbridled freedom.
Or:
Global warming isn't as bad as you've been told. We're certainly not going to die from it.
Anyway, I've always thought Colbert sucks. I mean: not Samantha Bee-level suckage. But that shtick of his was old the second time I saw it. But he gets away with it here, I guess. I mean--he's getting away with it, right?
Or is he almost asking her a serious question?
I kinda think he may be.
Or maybe he's mad at her for having weakened Biden in any way.
Or, again: maybe he's just using the shtick in this case, going with it to ask make a point that, objectively, needs to be made. In which case: the shtick may deserve props here.
I dunno.
Actually I now think this is a bad clip for making...whatever my point was...
Though I still think that coolness is a problem in any serious discussion. It illicitly favors...what? The flippant? The unserious? The frivolous?
Eh, I dunno.
