I'm no Acosta fan...but is there any reasonable defense of this?

No. It is clearly a Trumped up charge. Any contact is incidental, and any ref--in any sport--who called it would be chased out of the stadium with thrown beer.
Heh. ..any ref that is, except for one officiating Duke basketball.
