U.S. Denying Passports To Americans Along The Border, Throwing Their Citizenship Into Question

Pete Mac asked what I thought about this.
Eh, I dunno. I probably think what you think I think, and probably what you think:
First thought:
WTFF MAN? WHAT ARE YOU DOING? The whole point of immigration policies of this general sort is deterrence. You can't punish people because their parents lied about where they were born. It's not their fault. They've lived here all their lives. Some of them have served in the military. Leave them be, for the everlovin' love of everlovin' God, and make it clear that we're going to come down like the very fist of God on this stuff in futuro. This bullshit sounds mean-spirited as all hell.
Second thought:
Uh...hold on...it's the WaPo... This sounds too bad to be true...so it probably is. They picked out some egregious cases, e.g. Juan the veteran... Undoubtedly not typical. The title is even shifty: "U.S. denying passports to Americans along the border..." Not 'American citizens'...Americans. Which, of course, could even mean Mexicans... So... There's probably more to this than meets the WaPo propaganda.
Oh, and: "As the Trump administration attempts to reduce both legal and illegal immigration..." (my emphasis)? x doubt.
I've never trusted the Trump administration, and I no longer trust the Washington Post. How much of this is genuine Trumpian vindictiveness, and how much is media mendacity...I do not know. So I'm not gonna get bent out of shape about it.

If you look closely at the article too, the policy predated the Trump administration (I think it actually began with Clinton). So there really is no reason to contrast the Trump admin and WaPo here, unless you put it into the context of a decades long bipartisan policy consensus.

It is pretty ugly however you parse it:

INS must be putting a blanket ban on passports for midwife births, for it to affect open-and-shut cases like this. People with poor documentation are liable to be left stateless.
