SIU-Carbondale Advertises For "Volunteer Adjuncts"

Maybe with the money they save they can hire some more para-faculty, counselors, "diversity" "experts," "engagement" "facilitators," and student hand-holders. Or bump up administrator salaries or something.

Volunteer adjunct used to mean "emeritus with a desk". I presume this is no longer operative...

Hm. Is that true?

That seems way less bad, doesn't it?

My father had such a position, after retiring from research at Bell Labs. He got paid for the occasional class, but otherwise his title was 'adjunct' with no salary. He did advise a few grad students. If they are looking for retirees who want to keep their hand in it's a reasonable thing to bring up semi-formally. If they are looking for 'real unpaid staff', it's something else entirely.

Yeah, I was always told that this was what adjuncts used to be: people from the community who had special expertise and wanted to make it available to the university. Then it mutated into what we've got now.

Anyway: yeah, if that's what it is, then I'm for it.

Also: wow, Bell Labs. That's the shit, man. What was his area, if you don't mind me asking?
