Chait is actually being thick here. Turnbull's official explanation is he doesn't want to enable smugglers, but really Australians are concerned about 100 million Indonesians streaming into their country if they allow effortless immigration, which would really only happen by boat.
Talking about smugglers and making magnanimous gestures about allowing people into an island country by plane is an obvious political facade to soften an entirely rational, but quite un-PC policy (especially when you throw in the detention centers). Trump wasn't buying it, and he shouldn't.
You may very well be right about the policy--but I don't see any reason to believe that Trump is getting it and yanking his chain rather than just not getting it...but I suppose I should read the full transcript instead of Chait's excerpts.
I'd point out that one explanation basically requires you to believe Trump can't process English, while the other assumes that a guy who campaigned on not tolerating obvious PC bs doesn't actually tolerate obvious PC bs.
You are more than free to have a negative view of Trump's intelligence, but there are is a limit to what that claim can do.
Well, Trump is well-know for (a) being very anti-PC, and (b) being not-terribly-bright and (b') in particular, not being all that good at processing / producing English ...so...plausible explanations abound... But we'd probably have to read the full transcript to tell which explanation is most plausible I'm not gonna lie--I probably won't get around to doing that... But it's possible.
I've read the whole thing. I agree with Anon sub One that Turnbull's explanation is a pretext. Trump flat out did not understand the pretext.
