Well, to be fair to them, they receive support and praise for idiotic things they do all the time.
Their base pretty much goads them into doing increasingly stupid things until they cross a rational line from which the base must then distance itself, hanging them out to dry.
Reminds me of a bunch of college kids encouraging one another in drunken debauchery until the cops show up and anyone not directly committing said debauchery disappears..
