Eric Cantor, Overdog No More

So We've been in Massachusetts for the last five days, barely paying attention to the news. We even forgot the Republican primary was coming up. We stagger back home last night, exhausted from the trip, drink some Sierra Nevada, watch some Game of Thrones, immediately crash, oblivious to what's going on...and wake up to the happy news of Cantordammerung!

Couldn't have happened to a more deserving guy. Hoisted, petard, blah blah blah.

Wow, I really can't stop grinning about this.

Sadly, though, since the GOP presidential primaries of 2000, I never say "...and this guy is obviously too lame to win in the general..." But I'll worry about that later.

A friend of mine sent me an excited text to the tune of "DID YOU SEE WHAT HAPPENED TO CANTOR?!" and we got to talking about it.

I think any moderate Democrat should be able to win the seat. The district is generally not really full of crazy backwater hillbillies who don't have basic reasoning capacity (despite what this primary seems to indicate). However, the concern would be that the Democrats haven't even tried to find a candidate because they just assumed Cantor was a lock to win, this is the sort of situation were if the Democratic party isn't careful they could end up with their own loony and while moderate Democrat trumps loony Republican I think loony Republican trumps loony Democrat.

Forgot to put in my first comment, but the actually worrisome part of this is that it likely spells the end for our Orange friend Speaker Boehner. Don't get me wrong, I'm no fan of the Speaker, but Cantor had kept him in power by holding back the truly crazy right, without him the likes of Paul Ryan could make a run at the position, that that's not good for anyone.

Good points...

Though the 7th is pretty damn conservative, isn't it? I guess, upon reflection, I'm even less sure that a non-loony Dem can win...

And as for Boehner: oh, God...you're right... Jebus.

This reminds me soooo much of Lieberman. Both are whiny and sanctimonious. Both are hated by the party base. Both got creamed in the primaries, despite massive spending.
