Palin Won! Just Ask the Wingers!
And
Conservapedia and Other Ways To Avoid
The Biased Liberal Facts
Of Actual Earth
Well, scoping out Sullivan's roundup and the polls, we see that the only people who thought that Palin won seem to be the hard-core wingnuts.
Now, seeing what you want to see, and seeing what you expect to see, are among the most common features of human life. And they're downright rampant in political life. We all do it to at least some extent. Liberals do it a lot. But it seems to have become some kind of plague on the right. I know, I know--we're talking, for example, about Red Staters, Michelle Malkin and the like. But still...don't these people ever get tired of living in their own little universe of groupthink? I mean, what sane person could write the following:
Consider the strange case of George W. Bush. The evidence of his awfulness would seem to be undeniable...and, accordingly, the rest of the world recognizes said awfulness. As do American independents. Don't the dead-enders ever think it's a significant fact that they, the most extreme members of Bush's own political party, are the only people on Earth who still think he's not the worst president in recent memory? See, that's the kind of thing such that, were it me, I'd be shamed into facing the facts, no matter how resistant I was.
But not our friends across the aisle!
These are people who can watch a Sarah Palin interview and come out believing that she is brilliant...brilliant! The next Ronald Reagan! (Er, not that that's really such a high bar...but still...)
Think about it. The press reports things they don't like, so they start their own conservative media, conservative cable channel, etc.. Wikipedia is somehow too liberal for them, so they start their own "Conservapedia" (featured article at the time of this writing--Mitt Romney!). A big slice of 'em don't like some of the central findings of modern science, so we get "creation science."
So, will this ever stop or will they just keep generating new institutions to insulate them from politically incorrect facts? To call this tendency unhealthy is, I think, rather an understatement.
So, anyway: in Wingoverse, appaerently the Sarah Palin counterpart won big!
Here on Actual Earth, Biden won the day.

Sarah Palin just field dressed Joe Biden like a moose. She was awesome. She connected with the people. She had fun. She was relaxed. She was awesome.?

Interestingly, a coworker of mine who is extremely Republican (even thinking Bush is a good president) came in this morning with nothing but good things to say about Biden and mediocre things to say about Palin. I was shocked.
He said, "Biden had the best debate of his life, and that's really saying something."
I actually had to think about that for a second to make sure it wasn't a shot at Biden, but it looks like, if my coworker is somewhat representative of the hardcore right, Biden may go a long way for Obama. He said he didn't think Palin did anything ridiculous and that she was just about average, which I can almost agree with.
But Biden really did impress me a lot. I could've changed some things he said and argued a little more pointedly against Palin's too-frequent BS, but all in all, I think Biden was fantastic, and it was a surprising and happy revelation this morning to see that this interpretation was largely shared by an extreme right winger.
this fellow is 'fun' to read, too.
Dude - I didn't go to that blog 'cause I don't want to go crazy, but I did note the link.
I couldn't believe Palin looked at Biden and called a timetable a "white flag of surrender". I was actually really pissed that he didn't destroy her for that - pointing out the disgusting divisiveness and misrepresentation infused in that comment.
I was actually shocked - mouth hanging open and everything. Apparently no one but me cared 'cause no one else seemed to say how inappropriate that was.
