None Dare Call it Wanking:
The Poor Man on Instapundit, Administration Propaganda, and Defacing the Koran at Gitmo

The Poor Man sums it up for us.

You know, I've been getting more and more irritated with liberals of late. Sometimes you just can't get those people to see reason. Sometimes I even have thoughts like "maybe my natural home on the political spectrum is with the liberal Republicans..." But then I remember that liberal Republicans are a dying breed. And then I remember the theft of the 2000 election, the fact that two of the last three Republican presidents have been unqualified for the job, Watergate, Iran-Contra, the relentless torrent of propaganda and lies leading up to Gulf War Episode II, and the extent to which fundamentalists control the party...and I must sadly admit that the Democrats--God help us--are our only hope.

Anyway, this is really just a link to the Poor Man's post. I'm in the process of recovering from the semester and getting web access started up at Johnny Quest's digs. So real posting should resume soon.

Oh, and note that The Poor Man catches Rice still trying to link Iraq to 9/11. God, these people are reprehensible.

Abu Ghraib did not cause riots in the Arab world. The supposed desecration of the Koran did.

Interesting culture over there. Got their priorities straight for sure.

Constantine, I am a registered independent and normally ignore partisan hackery, but your ignorant rant deserves rebuttal:

"5 cells is worth assassinating doctors and blowing up abortion clinics" - How many abortionists have been murdered in the US? One is too many, obviously, but I believe the number is still in single digits. That is, less than the number of Afghans killed in last weeks' riots. If you can document otherwise, I would like to see it. While you're at it, you might also look into how many abortionists operate openly in the Islamic world.

"worth blowing up the Oklahoma Murrah federal building." - The perp there was Tim McVeigh, a staunch and outspoken atheist who was living proof that Westerners can become terrorists. Though not in even remotely the same numbers.

"more important to deal with the impending threat of gay marriage than to deal with the millions dying from aids " - How, exactly, are these issues mutually exclusive? Gay marriage initiatives have been defeated every time they have gone to voters, yet these same voters do want money spent on HIV research.

"pressing issue of making sure the 10 commandments are prominently displayed in all our public buildings" - It seems to me that these efforts are a reaction to efforts from the other side to remove every trace of religion from the public square. O'Hare, Newdow, et al.

"the flag burning amendment" - The rightie equivalent of hate speech laws. BTW, what do you think will happen to you if you burn a Saudi flag in KSA? Just asking . . . .

Constantine wrote: "I personally would be far more upset and angry over torturing family members, abusing children to get parents to "confess", the sexual humiliation of devout religious people . . . ."

The first "anonymous" in this thread (it wasn't me) pointed out that there's something sick about a culture that reacts more strongly to desecration of a book than to torture and murder of people. You reacted with an ignorant rant in which you tried to draw moral equivalence between that culture and ours.

But now you have apparently agreed with him. I suggest that you go figure out what you really think about this.

You believe that Christians are identically insane (when compared to Muslims) - that's ignorant.

I AM CHALLENGING YOU TO A MEDIA DUEL. You search for, and document, every occurence of Christian-motivated violence and repression that you can find in the world, and I will do the same looking for Islamic violence and repression. Whoever finds the most impressive list, the other guy must admit that he is ignorant and wrong.

GROUND RULES:
1) All events must have occured in the past two years.
2) All events must be documented by independent (as in not government-controlled) and reasonably balanced journalistic outlets; i.e. CNN and Reuters are acceptable, Fox and Arab News are not.
3) For this discussion, we will exclude normal crimes that occur in every society. Typical murders, thefts, and rapes are not to be counted unless they are clearly religiously motivated.

Let's set a deadline of, say, Friday at noon EST to submit our lists. Ready?

I'm not from the south. I do not believe that the insanity manifested in a deadly riot over a holy book is on par with the insanity manifested in people voting against a gay marriage initiative (to use your example). I would say that violence is in a class by itself, different in both degree and in kind from other forms of insanity. Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, the UNCHR, and pretty much every other human rights organization in the world see it this way. And while AI manages to blame the US for the problems of the third world, even they don't attempt to deny that the US is a much, much, much saner society.

So you acknowledge that our society is saner than theirs (though you worry that it won't be forever).

Well, you've made a real breakthrough today! Yes, you have. I see progress here. But I'm afraid our time is up for now. Did you bring your check? Thanks. My receptionist can help you set a time for next week. Take care!

The following are excerpts from a Friday sermon on Palestinian Authority TV. The preacher is Sheik Ibrahim Mudeiris. PA TV aired this sermon on May 13, 2005:

Ibrahim Mudeiris: Allah has tormented us with "the people most hostile to the believers" – the Jews. "Thou shalt find that the people most hostile to the believers to be the Jews and the polytheists." Allah warned His beloved Prophet Muhammad about the Jews, who had killed their prophets, forged their Torah, and sowed corruption throughout their history.

With the establishment of the state of Israel, the entire Islamic nation was lost, because Israel is a cancer spreading through the body of the Islamic nation, and because the Jews are a virus resembling AIDS, from which the entire world suffers.

You will find that the Jews were behind all the civil strife in this world. The Jews are behind the suffering of the nations.

... don't ask Germany what it did to the Jews. It was the Jews who provoked Nazism to wage war against the entire world, when the Jews, using the Zionist movement, got other countries to wage an economic war on Germany and to boycott German merchandise. They provoked Russia, Britain, France, and Italy. This enraged the Germans toward the Jews, leading to the events of those days, which the Jews commemorating today.
We have ruled the world before, and by Allah, the day will come when we will rule the entire world again. The day will come when we will rule America. The day will come when we will rule Britain and the entire world – except for the Jews. The Jews will not enjoy a life of tranquility under our rule, because they are treacherous by nature, as they have been throughout history.

The day will come when everything will be relieved of the Jews - even the stones and trees which were harmed by them. Listen to the Prophet Muhammad, who tells you about the evil end that awaits Jews. The stones and trees will want the Muslims to finish off every Jew.

The "sermon" aired on official Palestinian TV. Big difference.

And if you think it represents only a tiny minority, I have some holes in the ground in New York to show you.

First, to get people to recognize who the real enemies to their lives and freedom are. To get people to recognize that opposing gay marriage isn't the moral (or political) equivalent of chopping heads off.

To get people to understand militant Islam, that weakness in the face of this jihad encourages the thought among the world's 1.1 billion Muslims that these are the end times that their scripture promises.

The vast majority of Muslims who see Islam merely as a spiritual code could be moved to embrace its political dimension, not because of provocation (Lord knows the Crusades are sufficient), but because of the prospect of success and our illustrated willingness to help destroy ourselves.

Kick the Falwells if you must, but it's a lame game. Unlike your real enemies, they will not kill you and your children for it.

An interesting glimpse into the philosophical questions facing Islam. We are in a race---if Islam rediscovers Aristotle and the exquisite al Farabi, democratization is possible, and that would be a darned good thing.

The problem is one of philosophy, not of technique.

The link I posted addresses it. You're thinking Rousseau, they're still stuck back in mid-Hobbes.
