Evan Bonsall: 5 Hard Truths Democrats Must Face About Education
link
The most important ones:
1. Students stopped learning during COVID; We've failed them.
2. Democrats have too often responded to learning loss by lowering standards.
I don't know whether 1 is true--but everybody seems to think it is. It wouldn't surprise me.
But 2 seems clearly true--and it's kinda the Dems' M.O...
I'd add:
The education major and ed schools are disasters.
They are among the least-rigorous and most ideologically-captured parts of the university. I'm not sure I've ever heard anyone say that their ed courses were important--and I've heard many ed majors deride them. It seems pretty clear to me--though were I actually making decisions for the nation I'd need to learn a LOT more about it--that we should dump the ed major and require that teachers major in the subject they're going to teach.
Note: they tried getting rid of the ed major in VA at one point...and universities just circumvented it by coming up with other BS majors for ed-school students to take.
One more thing:
Apparently (at least at my school) ed majors have to get at least Bs to pass...but they're typically not great students... So the ed school just makes the courses easy and lets them re-take any course they get below a B in...
