This action isn't crazy, but it's part of a wave of anti-firearm legislation.

At least Northam has backed off of some of the truly crazy shit they were saying--e.g. that they'd call out the Guard.
They're still thinly camouflaging their totalitarian horseshit with terms like "gun safety" and "common-sense gun legislation."
