WaPo: Mexico "Talked Trump Out Of Tariff Treat" With Immigration Crackdown Pact
link
So...how is this headline even remotely objective. Why isn't it: Trump's tariff threat causes Mexico to act on migration mess?
Trump's swift victory--especially on this issue--must have put the pressroom on suicide watch. Usually there'd be a bit more subtlety in such spin. This is kinda like Japan manipulates U.S. into ending military operations by unconditionally surrendering. Though we'd also need some reference to U.S. bullying in there somewhere.
Not to turn a story about a Trump win and blue-team petulance in a criticism of Trump, but: if he could keep his cool just a little bit, and act just a little bit normal, this sort of win would make him basically unstoppable in 2020. But he can't, so he won't be.
A "safe third country" accord seems to be the next goal. One would think that this, too, should have been effected long ago.
Where's the OAS on this, anyway?
I used to harp on how the U.S. needed to put more resources into helping Central America; after all, we did a lot to help break it. But at this point, it seems basically too late for that.
I'm not even sure what can be done to help Mexico at this point--especially given that 80% of its territory is controlled by the cartels. But I've long thought--and continue to think--that we should be willing to expend a lot of resources to try. If Mexico could be saved that would be good in itself, it would decrease illegal migration here from there, and it would provide a buffer against uncontrolled migration from Central America.
But actually stemming the tide so that we can make it through the current crisis is a necessary first step--or so it seems to the layperson.
Anyway: looks like props are due Trump on this one, bitter though that pill will be for many.
