Chait: "Russian Leverage Over Trump Is Not Just A Theory. It's Now Fact."

Coupla things:
First and foremost: holy crap.
Also something: Jonathan Chait doesn't seem to know what the word 'fact' means.
Nevertheless: holy crap.
If the anti-Trumpistas, including the media, were not so nutty and dishonest, I'd be tempted to revert to an argument I used to accept, i.e.: it almost doesn't matter, in a case like this, whether the President is innocent or guilty. In a case like this, in which we obviously can't prove his innocence beyond a reasonable doubt, he's got to go. Not got to jail, obviously. But: be put out of office. We can't be fiddling around with niceties here. I still doubt the collusion story--but I don't care that much whether it's true or false. If I need brain surgery, and there are credible accusations of incompetence against Dr. Smith, I'm not going to sink two years into investigation, nor am I going to care that much if the case is too murky to decide for sure. Credible accusations ==> I'm out. (Though that policy would open us up to meddling of a different kind...)
But I'm just shooting my keyboard off. Officially, I'm still just waiting on Mueller's conclusions.

My only hope is that people actually judge revelations such as these, of which I fully expect there to be far more coming, to be as important as they are.

I'm fairly convinced that public skepticism and apathy is what has resulted in trump's election, and I am not convinced that it won't keep him in office regardless of whatever is discovered about him.

Does his base even care if he's compromised by the Russians? Will they think this is just how all politicians behave, and if there weren't a witch hunt going on, trump would fly under the radar just like they all do? I have no idea.

It is truly amazing how genuinely insane our political system appears when recent candidacies for the Presidency are juxtaposed;

HRC's campaign was
* fatally struck by her mismanagement of emails
* subjected to bona fide insanity over Benghazi
* subjected to intense and relentless scrutiny over every assertion of hers bearing any potential for identification as a lie

trump's campaign is:
* Getting away with lies at an actually unprecedented rate in American politics
* Successfully spinning as a wich hunt increasingly-substantiated allegations of subversion by malicious foreign powers
* Unimpeded by a revolving door of appointment-->scandal-->dismissal for high level staff

America seems to me to be demonstrating that it just doesn't give a shit anymore. People are either insanely dedicated to trump regardless of any evidence that they should not be or insanely dedicated to anti-trump-ism to the extent that even the greatest evidence against him is exaggerated, misstated, and misinterpreted.

I don't want to be an alarmist, but this is the sort of thing that happened when Rome fell.

Thought experiment

Imagine if HRC won the election and WJC became first spouse. Then substitute WJC for DJT in this story. What would Democrats say? What would Republicans say?
