I would like to see cars and trucks banned or at least phased out in place of safe, convenient public transportation. Of course, the latter will never happen so neither will the former. Of course, that's probably a different discussion.

I wouldn't mind if people *chose* to rely less on cars...it's the totalitarian urge to micromanage human life that alarms me.

Also...some people prefer public transportation and some don't. Some would rather not have to drive, some would rather not have to be crammed in with a bunch of other people. Personal choice. Me, I hate both driving *and* other people...so at least I'm fairly objective on this one...

I hate driving *and* other people also. I really do. But there was a time that i could bus to the university and almost anywhere I needed to go. It was a lot less stressful than driving...*and* not liking other people especially when they're driving. Well...

Winston-
Banning cars in a city is the first request along the way to a compromise. Broadway in NYC is *awesome* since cars were banned on a significant part of it. The west side highway park (not parkway) is glorious. Traffic jams in cities suck. So banning cars in significant subsections of at least one city has proven massively popular. And yes, public transportation, bicycles, and indeed motor scooters are a large part of the solution.
That said, terrorism is not a particularly useful argument against cars. Sharing the no fly list with truck rental sites is rather more immediately practical.

Turning one part of one street into a pedestrian mall or whatever is very different than banning cars "from every U.S. city."
