FIRE Statements On Berkeley Riot And Trump's Threat To Withhold Funds

   It's also worth a glance at the comments just to remind yourself how depressing the situation is. There you will learn many fascinating things, e.g. that "hate speech" is not protected by the First Amendment, and that violent riots to suppress speech are self-defense.
   FIRE seems to be right about the other matter, too. If Berkeley shut down the event for safety reasons, I don't see how they can be blamed. They will have to take steps to prevent such actions from being used to suppress speech in the future, but it seems like a reasonable response once a riot is already in progress. Once the fascists (right or left) are on the attack, dealing with that becomes job one, no?
