The photos are somewhat misleading. They are taken 45 minutes prior to the inauguration, at 11:45. Trump's audience at noon did extend as far back as the temporary building in the foreground of his photo (but not in the photo of Obama's inauguration.). The difference is that people came very early to Obama's inauguration to get seats at all, because by noon, the Mall was packed all the way back to the Washington Monument.
There are pictures of this available on the web. I assume Trump had the temporary building there to make it appear that the crowd didn't just fade off to nothing in the background. You can see the noon crowd here.
