Trump Didn't "Urge Russia To Hack Clinton's E-Mail"

That headline disappeared from CNN, so I can't link to it, and it's only approximate. So quotes are a cheat. So I cheated in the title. But that's damn close to their original headline. (CNN.com seems to do that a lot--put up a salacious headline on their home page that doesn't appear on the story page, and then take it down later.)
But anyway, Trump also isn't doing what this headline says he's doing:
"Trump Calls On Russia To Find Hillary Clinton's e-Mails".  That's the NPR headline that the Google reveals...but that also seems to have later been changed.
Rather, it was basically a joke. Russia hacked your server? Ha ha hope they found those 20k e-mails you "lost" LOLZ.
Liberals are losing their minds over this guy. And, as per usual, they are making mountains out of molehills, stretching for the worst interpretation of his words. Yeah, yeah, conservatives do this shit too. But liberals are the ones who elevate it to an art form.
This does remind me a bit of the faux outrage over Kerry's "what we need is regime change at home" quip. That was pretty funny, and I was sad that he apologized for it and dropped the line. This Trump stuff is way worse than that, because it's a kind of play on suggestions of collusion with Russia. And that's kinda not cool.
But look: the real question is: is there any collusion with Russia, or any support coming from Putin? If the answer is in the affirmative, then that's what matters. If the answer is in the negative, then a joke's a joke.
Dems are just playing this shitty game...just like the GOP...but it's damn stupid and annoying. It's a distraction from the real issues here. I wouldn't be surprised if Russia were trying to torpedo HRC's campaign and help out Trump. What could strike a bigger blow against America than that buffoon as president?
But Trump's joke is just not really what ought to be at issue here.

I sometimes wonder, WS (and I have a lot of respect for you and this blog), if you aren't doing...a little of the same thing against the liberals.

THE NERVE

Well, I'd be pretty surprised if I *weren't* screwing a lot of things up, including that avoidable kind of thing.

But just as for this case: do you really think that it's fair to say that Trump is urging Russia to hack HRC's email or whatever?

I mean I honestly think stretching *LOL if you're out there, Rooskies, cough up those 'lost' emails* (which I honestly think is a pretty fair gloss on what he said) is *lightyears* away from *I encourage Russians to hack her email.*

I can no longer tell with Trump to be honest. The man is such an inveterate bullshitter who shoots from the hip (or wherever he shoots from). I can honestly believe he was urging the Russians to release the emails if they had them. And maybe i'm a loopy lefty for thinking that but...I, can, honestly, believe, it. As for what he really meant when he said i'm not even sure he knows at this point.

Look, I'm pretty sympathetic with that.

But even if he were sincere, it seems to me that "release the emails if you already have them" (which is how I was interpreting his utterance) is way different than "go forth and hack ye some more."

But maybe not.

Still, it's pretty borderline, at best, I agree.

And, as I meant to add to the post:
If a Dem had done anything even remotely approaching this, s/he'd be eviscerated by the GOP.

Imagine a Dem joking about colluding with a far left-wing government to try to gain electoral advantage... The shitstorm would never end.

I wonder if this statement of Trump's is demonstrably less-flippant than anything else he says.

I have a feeling Trump's the kind of guy who has for his whole life ridden on the defense that he's "just joking" or whatever whenever there's a critique to be had.

Huh.

Yeah...it really is his mode of being...or at least communicating. He just fires off whatever happens to be in his head at the time...he's not that serious...he's not really committed to its truth...it's not something that he's thought about much...

Kinda like the shit in this blog...

Anyway, also: it may not be so much a *defense* as it is just who he really is.

I've thought about stuff like that in conjunction with his alleged racism. I think he's the kind of guy who just says shit in the way described above. Liberals, who think that any infelicitous speech about race is a Deadly Serious Matter, freak out. It reveals his inner racism! Conservatives think: Oh, he didn't say the most PC thing in one or two cases--big deal.

Maybe this is a big difference that's in play here.
