Marcotte on Bloom on Objectification

http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2013/12/02/please-make-your-research-studies-in-response-to-real-people/

Oops, sorry, didn't mean to post this. This was just a reminder to myself to post on this.

As The Mystic points out below, no, Bloom in no way makes the assumption that Marcotte says he does, and, in fact, that was the main point I'd intended on making. I mean...he doesn't even come close to assuming that. That's a radically irresponsible reading. In fact, it borders on just plain making shit up.

It's kind of funny that one of her main points is that Bloom assumes that only women feel sexual desire, and one of her other main points is that you should address what proponents of a given view actually say...

I know I've been busting on feminism a lot, but I seem to just keep running into this stuff, and now it's in my head.

"It’s an argument that should immediately raise a red flag because it’s based on an assumption—that feminists believe that only men feel sexual desire—that is so obviously false that it’s laughable."

That assumption doesn't seem to be made in the claim the author quotes and appears to be referencing:

"Many contemporary feminists agree that sexual desire, particularly when elicited by pornographic images, can lead to “objectification.” The objectifier (typically a man) thinks of the target of his desire (typically a woman) as a mere thing, lacking autonomy, individuality and subjective experience."

In fact, the parenthetical qualifiers seem to directly rule out the asserted assumption, no?

BTW: Having said that, I agree with the author's main point that people need to be specific in their critiques. I'm not sure to what extent her article demonstrates that this is a problem, but I don't doubt that it is at least somewhat problematic.

It gives me great relief that you were not posting this in a promotional sort of way.

I would have been worried about you if I hadn't been conditioned over the course of knowing you to instead worry for my own sanity when something you endorse seems obviously wrong to me.
