"That One"

Is that the McCain camp's new version of "The One"?

Although I hate to defend a sleazebag like McCain, "that one" is a locution my maternal grandparents used to use. It was, so far as I can remember, always used in a jokey way. It was used rather like some people use the locution "this guy"

I felt at the time that it was a clear verbal trip rather than an intentional rhetorical shadowing. It sounded like he was saying something like "Do you know which one of us voted for the bill?" The answer, of course, being "that one [of us]."

And McCain seemed this time around to dial down the disdain for Obama that really showed in the last debate. So, it seems less likely that he would throw in such a blatant jeer. But then, Wolf Blitzer got a different impression than I did about the visibility of said disdain, so I dunno.

But it doesn't make much difference anyways. The debate was pretty ho-hum: we learned nothing new about the candidates and there was nothing drastic enough to boost McCain in the polls.
