Little Bitty Cars?
I've often wondered why people in 2-car families who live in town don't have one car roughly like this. I mean, most trips around town only involve one or two people, and don't require significant storage space.
Of course, I'd be rather nervous about such a car these days, give that about half the cars on the road are 5,000 lb monstrosities driven by morons talking on cell phones...
(Incidentally, thanks to the Bush administration for instituting a bogus tax break to encourage people to buy SUVs, thus putting one more barrier in the way of getting people to buy sensible cars. Nice work, guys!)

I dunno... for that price you could get a Corolla, with slightly worse gas mileage, but space for four passengers and a trunk.
I also have to wonder how it drives in inclement weather. You want something heavy if you drive in the snow--that looks more like a bobsled.
Then again, most people don't have to drive the kinds of roads we do here, so maybe it isn't a problem.
A Prius gets 50-55mpg and seats 4. Of course, it costs 2x as much as a Smart Car.
But 40 mpg is really not all that great. I used to get 44 with an 1980 Rabbit diesel, and it came with a bonus anti-tailgating smokescreen feature. (Just throw in the clutch and goose the gas a little. Poof!) OTOH, 'zippy', it was not. But the diesel Golf isn't bad.

Sorry--didn't make myself clear...that's why I said "a car roughly like this." I mean, what sane person is going to drop the coin for a *Mercedes*?
What I mean is that it should be easy to build a little bitty car of this general kind--perhaps all-electric--for trips around town. Most everybody needs one real car for e.g. highway driving...but imagine how much better the traffic/parking situation would be if everybody who was just e.g. running out for milk was driving one of these things instead of a GMC Dreadnought...

Wasn't that the Yugo? ;)
