Bush "U-Turn" on Global Warming?

Sez the Independent (via Metafilter).

Stranger things have happened, I guess. Jeez, we'll make a member of the reality-based community out of him yet...

Forgive my cynicism, but any new Bush policy initiative floated in September or October of an election year is suspect on its face.

Without further evidence, I expect Bush's notion of a global warming initiative will be about as useful as tits on a boar, the Replican prescription drugs program, and the Send Men to Mars initiative.

And it's hardly leadership if you have to be dragged to the position screaming, by Arnold and Al Gore, no less. Still, it's a positive sign.

Actually, the mission to Mars stuff has had a real effect -- my girlfriend works at JPL, and apparently it's been harder getting funding for "pure science" projects and missions that don't have a bullet-point proof-of-concept that would be useful for later manned missions.

If this is true, I'll be more than willing to stand up and applaud Bush loud and hard for doing something right. Especially after reading the latest news about the ice caps receding, I have a weird feeling climate change is gonna do more to hurt the US than terrorist attacks will... so definite kudos to the man if he's addressing this sooner rather than later.

All the more reason to wish Gore had gotten in the White House in 2000, though...
