What a train wreck this is.

   I'll probably go through this in detail later for your reading pleasure...but, quickly: this is a great example of being dragged to approximately the right conclusions by a bunch of bullshit political considerations. A somewhat too uncharitable summary:

Well, we progressives really want a bunch of crazy shit like open borders and homeless encampments everywhere...but most voters inexplicably don't want those things, So--although the disintegration of society isn't that bad per se--the right will "weaponize" it against us if we keep doin' it. So I guess we'd better think of some half-assed reasons why progressivism never wanted those things anyway...

Well, here's the thing: stop trying to save far-left, politically-correct progressivism. It's a goddamned trainwreck of stupid. Instead of trying to Gerrymander some successor patched together from the decomposing body parts of your failed ideology, Dr. Frankenstein, just let it go. It belongs dead.
