Sasha Stone: It's Too Late To Cry "Cancel Culture"
Here's something that's astonished me since 2016--well after I realized that political correctness had resurfaced in the persons of the Social Justice Warriors (as we called them at the time--and before 'woke' had become the standard term), but before I had given up on the mainstream Democrats. (I voted for HRC because I considered Trump a "reductio ad absurdum of American democracy"...(which...I dunno...may not have actually been all that wrong...I'm still not sure.))
Anyway, among other things, Stone links to this video from 2016 Trump rallies in California, e.g. in San Jose, where...well before Trump even seemed to have a chance...leftists descended on rallygoers and assaulted and beat them en masse--including women and the elderly. They barely show the scene that struck me most: a female Trump supporter, cornered by dozens of (mostly male) leftist rioters, hit in the head with eggs and spit on for minutes on end, jeered at, threatened, humiliated. Though she stand up to them like a champ, laughing at them--it's the best and most courageous thing she could have done. She's trapped against glass hotel doors, but the people inside keep them locked--they are too afraid to try to let her in...which I consider cowardly beyond comprehension...though it's clear that if they try to let her in, they will be swarmed by the violent, psychopathic mob... I'd do it anyway. But not everyone is as stupid as I am...
These mass violent attacks against peaceful Trump supporters would have dominated the news for weeks at least if the tables had been turned. Possibly the left would speak of it as the speak of January 6th. It might have been forever held up as indicative of the nature of Trump's support...but, because the rioters were progressive leftists, it was barely a blip on the MSM radar:
These riots--almost never so called by the MSM--helped me begin to see that my own (then) team was the baddies...
As for cancel culture itself: though I oppose it in general, I'm happy to see conservatives fighting fire with fire. Let 'em have it--for awhile. Give them a taste of their own vile medicine. Then publicly pledge not to use the tactic again--except to retaliate for the left's using it.
Importantly, the right's use of the tactic is much more defensible than the left's. The left has used it for a decade, to ruin the lives of people for small deviations from lunatic leftist orthodoxy. Often--commonly--they would seek out some small unclarity in perfectly innocuous things people would say, dishonestly spin these up into faux "racism" or whatever, and use them to ruin innocent people's lives.
Currently, conservatives are merely finding and reporting objectively horrific things leftists are posting online about Kirk's murder and reporting them to employers. And many employers are themselves judging that they don't want such people working for them. If I had an employee that was laughing about the murder of an innocent man and calling for more of the same, I'd fire him (or, more often: her), too.
The use of these tactics by right and left are not symmetrical.
Well, anyway.
