Dudes are pretty funny.

Lots of lefties who fell for this never recanted.

Some of these errors/hoaxes aren't so obvious. This one was like the UVA/Rolling-Stone rape hoax--obviously bullshit from the get-go. Yet progressives fell for both en masse. And anyone who stated the obvious--that the stories made no sense--was ripped into. Then, of course, when the facts become undeniable, the story largely just fades away--with no "reckoning."
