I don't know anything about the history of public health mistakes...so wouldn't be in a position to compare this one to other doozies. And, well, I'm not even in a position to conclude that this one was an error. But that's where I'd put my money if I had to. IMO we should have recommended that vulnerable people (old, overweight, diabetic and other comorbidities) stayed home, and the rest of us should have gone about our business with increased caution.
