"Freedom Of Speech Doesn't Mean Freedom From Consequences"
I'll call that claim "FSFC."
Almost everyone who asserts FSFC is against freedom of speech.
Not necessarily--but in actual fact.
It's become one of the PC cult's mantras.
I'll make this short:
First: FSFC isn't true.
Freedom of speech does, in fact, mean freedom from certain consequences.
As a moral/legal principle--e.g. as manifested in the First Amendment--freedom of speech means: the government can't punish you for the content of your speech. There are, of course, certain exceptions. And that topic's interesting and difficult.
But the point is: FSFC is false. QED.
But freedom of speech is also a broader idea--a moral idea and an epistemic ideal. It's not just some arbitrary legal principle we happen to have.
Second, briefly: the more irrational and draconian the consequences for stating (especially: reasonable) opinions, the less free is our speech.
The problem with the contemporary pomo-prog-PC left is that they absolutely lose their motherfucking shit when people disagree with their crackpot dogma.
Currently, there are certain patent truths--e.g. no woman is male--such that, if you say them, you won't just get pushback...nor just other reasonable consequences...rather, you'll likely have a shrieking mob of unhinged political cultists trying to ruin your life--e.g. via character assassination and loss of livelihood.
Now, if I refuse to admit you to my research team because you've told me that you are a skeptic about scientific method...that's one thing. Or if I encourage my friend not to marry you because you are a Klansman or a Maoist. Or if I don't let my dogs go near your house unsupervised, because you've told me that you think it's permissible to kill and eat people's pets... Well...all those are reasonable consequences of unreasonable views.
A rabid mob clamoring for your head because you don't believe in "gender identity" or "structural racism" or Bigfoot...that's a different thing entirely.
Third and finally: to assert FSFC under the current circumstances is almost always an attempt to assimilate the unreasonable reactions/consequences to the reasonable ones.
A BLM/Antifa mob attacked your house while your wife and kids were home alone? Oh well. Free speech doesn't mean freedom from consequences.
In conclusion: STFU with that FSFC bullshit.
