NYT: "Jussie Smollett Attack: As Mystery Deepens, Investigation Changes Course"
LOL
There is no mystery, and therefore there is no mystery to deepen.
It's exactly what it's always been: an obvious hoax.
Note that they very progressives that leaped to gnash their teeth and denounce Trumpistas after the initial, entirely unsubstantiated, obviously false, accusations of racism are now dragging their feet when it comes to acknowledging the proof of hoaxery.

You have to look at it from the perspective of a progressive. If you think a completely farcical, unsubstantiated hate crime is not only highly likely, but indicative of society at large, completely plausible, substantiated evidence that it was a hoax probably will seem pretty mysterious.
That said, even I wasn't cynical enough to think he completely staged the whole thing. I assumed he was beaten up then elaborated details to get attention. What sort of megalomaniac thinks this sort of thing is acceptable?
I though he totally made it up out of thin air...but not that he hired people to stage it.
There was a story going around that a jilted lover beat him up after seeing him at a nightclub or something and he made up the story to save face too. Seemed much more likely than either it being a hate crime, or frankly that he would hire Nigerians to commit an anti-black racist hate crime, file a police report, then go all over national media talking about how its emblematic of the country today.
Like I want to chuckle at the stupidity of it, but it's so hard to do with my jaw dragging along the floor.
I actually think this is a better example of how completely blinded by confirmation bias the media has become than the Covington thing, which was more an act of outright maliciousness on the part of WaPo followed by the rest of the media gleefully allowing themselves to be suckered. This was just plainly bogus and they still couldn't bring themselves to evaluate the merits of the case objectively.
One of the things that bothers me is the line the left (and the media) keeps spouting: “This just makes it harder for the next person who really IS a victim of a hate crime!”
News flash: This was a hate crime. And the objects of that hate were white male Trump supporters. The media also needs to take a good, long look at how their mawkish and uncritical news coverage incentivizes these sorts of hoaxes.
