Trump's Shitty Soviet History

Yeah, I think my jaw actually dropped when I heard he said this.
I mean, the media is doing its usual bullshit...Trump was really trying to say that the invasion of Afghanistan hastened the end of the USSR. I guess he was trying to make the cases more similar in order to justify his talk of pulling out. Politicians get history wrong all the time. It's ignorant, but it's not really a case of "repeating Russian propaganda."
   Still kinda facepalmerific, though.

There's more BS in that writeup actually. A big point they were making is he was contradicting the policy constructed by Brzezinski. Why we need to be beholden to the decisions made by long retired foreign policy principals regarding a now extinct regime is beyond me. Unless its knee-jerk opposition to a more realist turn to our policy. The anti-Putin BS actually irks me less than the pro-establishment BS because it's so obvious our FP establishment is horribly incompetent and hidebound.

What would actually be more interesting is to ask whether Afghanistan benefitted from the removal of Soviet rule we supported. It's kind of a hard choice, but I think Islamic theocrats might be the rare competition Communists have for shit rulers, and the vaunted policy establishment of yesteryear might have actually done Afghans a disservice. Other former Central Asian states that were properly a part of the USSR seem to have done much better for instance. They aren't exactly examples of wealth and prosperity but they didn't incubate and harbor Al-Qaeda either.

It's dumb, but I never thought of that... Damn. You could be right.
