Honestly, I'm really not so sure what's loony about this:
“This is about the most serious counterintelligence people we have in the U.S. government saying, ‘Oh, my God, the president’s words and actions lead us to conclude that somehow he has become a witting, unwitting, or half-witting pawn, certainly in some regards, to Vladimir Putin,'” Bernstein explained during his appearance on Reliable Sources .
“From a point of view of strength… rather, he has done what appears to be Putin’s goals. He has helped Putin destabilize the United States and interfere in the election, no matter whether it was purposeful or not,” the journalist added. He then explained that he knew from his own high-level sources that Mueller’s report would discuss this assessment."
That's...how it seems to me? What in there is wrong?
Trump has:
1. Directly contradicted US intelligence departments' assertions that the Russians had a concerted and significant effort to influence the outcome of the US election.
2. Consistently praised Putin, endorsing Putin's assertions as true over the assertions of US intelligence departments.
3. Treated Putin in a manner wholly different from just about everyone else he deals with, refusing to say anything disparaging about him even when Putin makes snide remarks about trump...
And we have reports of:
4. Manafort giving polling results to Russian agents.
5. Meetings between trump's staff and parties who appear to be Russian agents about which the President and his staff lied repeatedly.
5. Various staff members lying about conversations with Russian government staff.
6. Private meetings with Putin which exclude all staff except for the President and a translator.
7. Translators' notes being taken after these meetings.
8. The Russians having compromising information regarding the President.
For real, dude, I don't think it's fair at all to say you'd have to be really stupid to believe that trump is exactly what Bernstein says in that article: "somehow he has become a witting, unwitting, or half-witting pawn, certainly in some regards, to Vladimir Putin."
I don't know how to reasonably explain everything above otherwise. The most seemingly-obvious explanation that ties together everything above is:
A. The Russians have leverage over his stupid ass and they're using it.
The only reason to reject it is: that seems crazy.
On that account, I've just been awaiting a final report. Honestly, if the report does not indicate that what Bernstein has said is true, that will be more surprising to me than if it does. I will be very interested in the explanation for all of those numeric points above if it's not (A).
The thing is, Bernstein really isn't meaningfully on the Left. On teh Russia, the Left, a la The Nation and The Intercept, has been pretty reasonable in my view. What's really happened is the left-liberal establishment went utterly, mouth-foamingly bonkers on it, which scares me much more, because ideally they would be the reasonable check on the left where it does go nuts.
Some of this is a bifurcation on the Left, where there's a committed, old guard that wants to focus on economics and foreign policy, and a new new Left that wants to focus on identity. The establishment sided with the latter because they view it as a way to farm votes, but the reality is the old guard is substantially wrong, except on foreign policy (yet in many cases reasonable), and the new new left is not even wrong and completely unreasonable, and so both need to be checked by a sane Dem establishment.
