How The Cost Of Light Fell By A Factor Of 500,000

The amount of labor that used to buy about 50 minutes of light now buys about 50 years of light.

This is a little misleading. Yes, if what you are doing is reading by candlelight, the cost of lighting is way, way down. On the other hand, if what you are doing is illuminating an empty parking lot, the cost of lighting is much higher. If you wanted to do it in the distant past, you would bring a lantern with you, and leave it dark the rest of the time.
