Affirming a plurality of genders is not the same as equating gender with sex, nor as forcing people to accept that changes in gender presentation are tantamount to changes in sex. Winston Smith said...: Yeah, I agree...the joke doesn't quite work...but 'sex' isn't a funny term, whereas 'gender' has become hilarious.

Although, there's a pretty good argument that there are only two genders: *masculine* and *feminine* the only other real contender is *androgynous*...but you can characterize that as intermediate between the two genders instead of as a third one (and I think its probably best to do so). The big lists of "genders" aren't really genders. I mean, gender *does*, in a sense, show up as a spectrum of options that isn't as bimodal as sex...but...
