One such story is interesting. But after that, I start wanting to see actual data. Total rate of 'hate crime' reports. Fraction that are hoaxes. Otherwise, these are just anecdotes that prove, well, I don't know what.
I think this was supposed to go under the blurb about the Jewish dude painting a swastika on his own house--but anyway, I more-or-less agree.
Anecdotes on both sides are interesting, but it'd be good to have numbers.
Though: There are just *so many* confirmed stories of such hoaxes that it's a bit hard to believe that the numbers are insignificant.
And I think the hoaxing phenomenon tells us almost as much about the shittiness of human beings as the real McCoy does.
Well..that's an exaggeration. But racism and other manifestations of arbitrary hate...it's all so *familiar*... The phenomenon of "hate crime" hoaxes...now that's, to my mind, something fairly new But I think it does tell us something fairly new under the sun...or at least something not so familiar...a surprising phenomenon that requires explanation...
