Trump: The Theater as "Safe Space"?

facepalm
Trump is Trump, so there's no sense in thinking too much about his exact phrasing. But I hope this "safe space" nonsense does not metastasize into the world outside of academia.

Is there any chance that Trump is trolling here? That is, he built a campaign against political correctness and all of its outputs (including safe spaces), and is now using the term 'safe space' derisively to parody a portion of his detractors? I have some things to say about this if it's true, but I'll leave those alone for now.

Then again, Trump is wildly inconsistent and seems hell-bent on jury-rigging positions that fit whatever his current plight might happen to be. So it's also very well plausible that he just can't see the irony of his use of 'safe space.'

Also, Twitter is such a terrible format for sharing ideas, and we all know that the correct attribution of his (or anyone's) words can be lost through text.

I'm leaning toward the "Trump is trolling" hypothesis, but it might all be overdetermined.

The main conclusion that I draw from all of this is: I don't care one way or another.

LOOOOOOL

I'm not sure of his intentions...but he doesn't seem very clever to me, so I'm not sure what to make of the trolling hypothesis...

But I'm 100% on board with your conclusion man.

I actually just decided to ask some Trump supporters what they thought about this issue, and all of them (three people) independently reasoned to the trolling hypothesis. Dunno what that's all about...I didn't ask them to elaborate really.

However, it *does* seem to me that his most ardent supporters make pains to interpret all of his uncivil and most bombastic comments as rhetorical ploys used to draw out "the intolerant left" into the public eye. I don't take it that Mr. Trump has this kind of tact either, but who knows..

Either way, it seems like an ill-advised tweet on all accounts of his intentions --that is, if you don't simply think that all tweets are ill-advised tweets...

We should spend more time deriding him for picking Jeff Sessions for AG, IMO.
