Crazy Fundamentalists and Mohammed the Teddy Bear
Lest we forget, here's the case of Gillian Gibbons, a 54-year-old school teacher who the government of Sudan wants to whip because her students named a teddy bear 'Mohammed.'
These people are just bat-shit crazy.

I don't get it, Jimmy. Was he suggesting that Sudan was taking her as a hostage against the British government?
I think Jimmy is on to something here. The Sudanese government can keep this woman in limbo for ages while trying to deal with enormous complexity of the case and the hurt feelings of the parents, who might feel better about the whole thing if the UK funded some projects in their region, and, oh, it is much harder to devote time to this troubling situation given the British government's attude regarding Darfur, etc.
From the standpoint of the Sudanese government, holding a foreigner indefinitely on a batshit crazy charge with a cruel penalty has little to no downside. Lybia got kiss ass and cold cash from the Bulgarians in exchange for releasing the Bulgarian nurses found guilty of the patently absurd charge infecting a hospital full of children with AIDS, and were thought to be moderate for taking the money. Sudan may be thinking to try a similar ruitine.
On-topic link - also, a good object lesson in the severe limits of democracy for the 7-year-olds.
