Conservative Delusions, 8/3/2007 Edition:
Don Surber

Check this by one Don Surber--dutifully linked to by Instapundit.

To summarize:

1. The surge is working!!!! (As we say in philosophy: interesting if true...)
(Is somebody keeping careful track of how many times we've won or been winning in Iraq?)

2. There are only two kinds of Democrats: (1) the ones who want us to "lose at any cost" and (2) those who are "weather vanes who follow the polls!!!!!" (And polls are bad!) (Hey, kids, which kind of Democrat are you? I'm a (1)! Oh, how I wish I could be both! But what if most people want us to lose the War on Terra(tm) at any cost!?!?!?! Then we could be both!)

3. (If you ask your questions very carefully) some of Bush's poll numbers in some polls are better than some of Congress's in some polls! And the DEMOCRATS run Congress!!! (And polls are GOOD!) (And it doesn't matter that some of those low numbers are accounted for by the fact that people are mad that Congress isn't standing up to Bush!)

4. Things are so bad that the Democrats are now worried about 2008!!! (Question: um, more worried than the Republicans are? A: Shut up.)

5. Carl Levin wants us to LOSE in IRAQ because it's GOOD for his POLITICAL Career! (Jesus! That guy must be DOWNRIGHT EVIL!)

Wow. I know quips about tinfoil hats are kinda passe...but really...what else do you say to something like this? We've wondered before around these parts who those 29% are who are still supporting Bush? Well, here's your answer.

Footnote:
Note that this isn't just an isolated wacko. He was linked to approvingly by Instapundit, perhaps the most influential of the conservative sites.

Surber: Rank-and-file Democrats already are worrying about the fate of all incumbents in 2008. They see the shift in public support. 42% now think the war was a good idea, up from 35% in May. These Democrats are tacking back.

Interesting. More dead-enders every day.

If by "more dead-enders every day" you mean "occasionally some polls will indicate a small rise in support for this dumb-ass war"...then yes, more dead-enders every day.

I hope the grasping of that straw gives you the comfort for which you are so desperately seeking.

If things go well, it was a good idea. If not, a bad one. That's how many people are, and accounts for the swing in polls.

"Dead-end" is your term of art, not mine. It implies hopelessness. Now that the hopelessness of this thing has moved from the "fact" column back to "opinion," some politicians don't know whether to spit or go blind, which was the point of the Surber piece.

It really has nothing to do with me and my desperation.

Things go terribly, y'all say we're winning. Things go merely badly, y'all say we're winning. Things go back to terrible--winning.

If we ever start winning, we will, of course be winning. I hope it happens, but I dread having to listen to y'all crowing about how you knew it all the time.

One is reminded of the puzzle about the woman who woke up one morning and said to her husband "our son will come home today" though he'd been gone for ten years. And he did come home. So how did she know?

The punchline is that she didn't: she'd said that every morning for ten years.

Again: I hope we do start winning. I hope it desperately. But it won't mean you were right.

And the worst indicator of success is righty-blogger crowing--to put way too fine a point on it, y'all are most decidedly like the woman in the fable.
