Haditha, Etc.

I suppose yet another reason to avoid war whenever possible is this: war frequently puts people in situations that can make them do crazy and immoral things that they would never do in a cool hour. When we're deciding about whether or not to go to war, we've got to take that into account. That is, we've basically got to say to ourselves: "Because of our decision, some people will probably become not just killers but murderers. The war will make them snap, and that's what they will become." So when we ask ourselves whether it's likely to be worth it, we've got to add those tragedies up alongside the innocent deaths, injuries, psychological trauma, and destruction of property.

I'm not prejudging the Haditha situation, but even if this isn't what happened there, it's certainly happened somewhere in this war, and perhaps happens in every war.
