Little Green Footballs and Desecrating the Flag

Dunno whether you know about a wildly amusing site called "Little Green Footballs." Oh, man, it's a hoot. In a we're all going to die because humans are so stupid kind of way...

Anyway, if you have nothing better to do with your life, go check out the comments on this story about a radical Islamist group stepping on and tearing up an American flag.

These morons (the flag-stomping ones, not the anti-flag-stomping ones) have picked a great time for this little stunt. I'm sure it'll be used by the Republicans for their annual July 4th effort to undermine the First Amendment by passing the anti-flag-burning amendment.

I've often said that virtually the only thing that would ever prompt me to burn the flag would be passage of anti-flag-burning laws. Needless to say, I hope it doesn't come to that.

I've suggested in the past that we should establish a national sign-up list now of people who will burn the flag if and only if such laws are passed. We need to get a sufficiently large number of people to commit to this ahead of time, making it clear to the anti-free-expression crowd that there is no way they could arrest all of us.

Cross burning, flag burning, Qur’an desecration. Why are people so obsessed by objects? Why not take the opportunity to consider the finer points of the ideas the objects represent? Show the burners, desecrators and urinators of the world what you're really made of.

Sign me up. I have never burned a flag, and I never will, unless the flag-burning ban is passed.

Yeah, you make me want to burn a flag and fire up a fattie with it. I hear you on this, WS.

I probably would have quit smoking by now if it didn't get my fellow Californians so deliciously indignant.

You can't legally smoke in any building here, but I light up just before I walk out the door. My little bit for freedom and civil disobedience. I'm a rebel, I tellya, a rebel. Fight the power!

Good point, m. I think it's creeping postmodernism of some kind--symbols over substance.

we're definitely on the same page here tvd. North Carolina just barely defeated a law banning smoking in all restaurants. (sadly it probably was b/c of financial self-interest, not b/c of good sense...) But the very consideration of the bill made be want to take up (tobacco) smoking... What a lunatic thing for the gov't to regulate. If the free market can solve any problem, you'd think it could solve that one...

Winston, I paraphrased you in my post today. Hope you don't mind. If you do, let me know and I'll remove what I wrote. I made it sillier sounding but I kept the sentiments the same...and I linked to your post.

Thanks,

surrogate

S,
Seems like a fair paraphrase to me. Thanks for the link.
