WTF Does That Mean?

Clinton, in China, said:

"Human rights cannot interfere with the global economic crisis, the global climate change crisis and the security crises."

WTF is that supposed to mean???

I took it to mean that we can't focus on Human Rights to the exclusion of everything else. We know what the Chinese will say, they know what we'll say, so we say it and put it into the broader context with all of the other complex issues facing the two countries and the world. (note I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with this policy at this point - though I lean towards agreeing - that's just how I'm reading these statements).

I think at Washington Monthly they had this posted also, but with more details...can't find it at the moment. Ah well, read it somewhere.

I'm not exactly sure what it means, but I can hazard a guess.

I think it means that:

"We know that you guys (the Chinese) are now embarking on your own internal stimulus plan to help create a domestic market so you won't have to depend upon exports to fuel your economic growth, since the world market for your produced goods is now circling the drain. So in light of the fact that you no longer *have* to lend us money at very low rates in order to finance our consumption of your products, please don't stop doing so, since we're in the process of auctioning off >$1T of our T-notes to finance our own rescue packages, and we'd prefer not to see the demanded interest rate on those notes start to rise, resulting in economic nuclear winter for us.

Pretty please?"

I think Lewis Carroll has it about right.

That's what I was afraid of.

Anybody in D.C. recall that governments not of, by and for the people are illegitimate?

The Chinese government is merely a very powerful, well-organized gang.

Translation of Clinton's assertion: "We cannot let the mere fact that you are a murderous authoritarian gang enslaving a billion people to stand in the way of our economic comfort."

We've basically, over the past several years, handed a loaded gun to a thugocratic state and put ourselves at their mercy.

Nice job, asshats.

I like the title of my post on this, so I'm here to do a little blog-whoring.
